Life & Work with Jackie Cabrera of Aventura

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Cabrera

Hi Jackie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been interested in fashion since a young age. I think I was probably 5/6 when I told my mom I wanted to pick out my own outfits now. My family has always been creative, my mom & grandfather are artists & we would always paint together. My aunt was in the beauty industry (she now has her own skincare brand, Tzol’Skin, which I manage the social media for & products are made in St Petes) & I envied her life in NYC, I dreamed of living there and working there in fashion. When I was in Middle School, my mom enrolled me in pre collage fashion design classes at FIT. I did that about twice a year until I was able to apply as a full time student once I graduated HS. I finally moved to NYC & was studying fashion, as I studied I realized how important social media is when it comes to fashion. Watching trends, inspiration, color stories, etc. When covid came around, It was my final semester and of course it looked different then I anticipated. Once I graduated, I spent about 6 months applying for jobs and had a lot of time on my hands. I decided to join my love for fashion & social media & attempt a fashion blog/influencer journey. Soon enough I began gaining followers and receiving offers for brand collabs. Between my full time job as a shoe designer in NYC and my social media, I am often in Miami to shop for inspo, shoot content, and enjoy the sunny weather & beaches of course! Luckily my aunt has a beautiful apartment in Aventura so all I need is to hop on flight & LGA is 15 minutes from my apartment in NYC, Miami is my second home.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I would definitely say one of the most challenging parts has been time management. It’s sometimes difficult to manage all the responsibilities that come with everything I do from my day job as a designer to my early AM / late PM job in social media. This was not smooth all the time and I definitely learned how to manage better with time. Everyone has a side hustle now and I’m sure it’s something everyone has had to deal with.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am shoe designer. This is my second corporate job in fashion, my first was at assistant level. Having graduated 5 years ago, I am extremely proud of how I have grown in the industry I have always aspired to be a part of.

I think what sets me apart from others and nothing is ever enough for me and I’m not sure if that’s a great thing but I am always striving for more. I love my creative day job but I also love to create for social media whether that’s for the Tzol’’Skin, the skincare brand I manage social for or my own personal social media / brand collabs.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Yes, every little bit counts. During covid, I was able to donate and sell cloth masks I was sewing in my own apartment. I saw big companies and designers in the fashion industry doing thing and I thought, I have a sewing machine. I want to work in the fashion industry, I can help too.
