Today we’d like to introduce you to Gayane Arushanian.
Hi Gayane, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a contemporary artist originally from Ukraine with Armenian roots, currently based in Miami.
Art has been part of my life since childhood. I studied art from a young age, later founded several art schools in Ukraine, and for many years combined teaching with my own artistic practice.
My work explores harmony, systems, and the hidden patterns that connect people, nature, and life itself. Through simple lines, shapes, and structures, I search for balance in a complex world.
Because of the war, I had to rebuild my life and career more than once. Today I am focused on my work as a full-time artist in Miami, creating paintings and sculptures that are now part of private collections in the United States, Canada, Europe, and beyond.
Looking back, every challenge, relocation, and new beginning became part of my artistic journey and shaped the work I create today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I cannot say that my journey has been smooth, especially considering everything I had to live through.
But at the same time, my love for art and my love for life have always been stronger. They are the force that keeps moving me forward.
One of the challenges was the physical side of being an artist — carrying large and heavy works, preparing exhibitions, working late nights, and doing many things by myself in order to make things happen.
Another important challenge was learning how to speak about my abstract art. When I started, especially in Ukraine, many people did not fully understand abstraction. At first, I tried to explain it to everyone. But with time, I realized that my work does not need to be understood by everyone.
This helped me find my own audience, my collectors, and people whose values truly connect with mine. In a way, these challenges helped me understand myself, my art, and the people I want to create for much more deeply.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a contemporary artist working primarily in abstract painting and sculpture.
What fascinates me most is the hidden order behind what often appears to be chaos. Throughout my life, I have been drawn to patterns, systems, structures, and the relationships that connect people, nature, time, and space.
My background is unusual because I studied Economic Cybernetics before fully dedicating myself to art. This way of thinking continues to influence my work. I often see the world through systems, connections, and recurring patterns that can be described through mathematics, but also felt emotionally through art.
Through simple lines, forms, and compositions, I explore ideas of balance, harmony, and the invisible forces that shape our lives. Many of my works are inspired by mathematical relationships, natural structures, and the belief that everything is connected.
What I am most proud of is staying true to this vision for many years and continuing to develop it through different series, paintings, and sculptures.
I believe what sets my work apart is the combination of analytical thinking and emotional perception. My goal is not simply to create abstract images, but to reveal the hidden structures that connect us to the world around us.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I believe that choosing the path of an artist is already a form of risk-taking.
Art is not the easiest career path. There are no guarantees, no clear roadmap, and no certainty about the future. You have to keep moving forward even when you don’t know exactly where the path will lead.
For me, risk is not only about making bold decisions. It is also about staying true to yourself. As an artist, I believe one of the biggest risks is refusing to betray your vision in order to fit expectations or trends. The moment you stop being honest with yourself, it becomes visible in your work.
I have had to rebuild my life more than once because of war and relocation. Moving to a new country and continuing my artistic career from the beginning was certainly a risk. But I have learned that growth usually starts where certainty ends.
So yes, I would consider myself a risk-taker. Not because I enjoy taking risks, but because I believe some things are more important than comfort — authenticity, freedom, and the courage to follow your own path.
