Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Mekka Rose.
Hi DJ Mekka Rose, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always had a deep appreciation for music. I’ve always been musically inclined and I attended a performing arts high school where I was able to develop even further. I play acoustic guitar at an intermediate level, African drums at an advanced level and I’ve been djing professionally for the past 14 years. I had a dear friend named DJ Double 12 teach me the ropes as far as how to use the equipment. He said “the rest is up to you”. So after months of practice he got me my first gig and then my career took flight from there. I’ve been in radio for the past 10 years and currently I am an open format DJ specializing in Afrobeats, Amapiano, House, RnB, Dancehall, ect.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This road has been more of a roller coaster. I started at a time where women really weren’t respected in this game. I had to work extra hard to prove that I was as good as the fellas. I was even advised at one point to change my name to something more masculine so that I could get bookings. I’ve also had to deal with other djs attempting to slander my name and reputation just to knock me of my throne. But they were never able to stop me because I was able to fight through and still get bookings around the world from London to West Africa.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a DJ, a poet and an entrepreneur. I am an all around creative. I play instruments and I’ve been doing West African dance for over 27 years. Im most proud of myself as a DJ because I’ve been on stages all over the world. DJing has taken me places that I never thought I’d go and I had to work very hard to get to that point in my career. I’m different from others because I dont just spin, I entertain and I interact with my audience as well. Im not just a DJ, I’m an entertainer. My goal is to make sure the crowd has a good time and loose themselves in the music and vibes.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lessons that I’ve learned on this journey is that when you get knocked down, and you will get knocked down, don’t stay there. Get right back up. Also, that you have to learn to block out the noise and have tunnel vision when it comes to your goals. Keep your eyes on the prize and stay hungry. I am my own competition.
