Life & Work with Deborah Gregg

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deborah Gregg.

Hi Deborah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.

I have a BFA in design and have worked over the years as an Interior Designer, Creative Director and Art Instructor. One common thread in my work experience is creative thinking and problem-solving. As is common with a lot of true creatives, the actual design platform doesn’t really matter because the problem-solving thought process is the same. I have worked in both Michigan and Florida. Both places have been great for my career, but you can’t beat the weather here in sunny Florida. Now, I currently live in Parkland for over 20 years.

As a kid, I’ve always been drawn to art of all kinds, but really thrived in the visual arts and was lucky enough to have parents who were (are) supportive and cheered me on in all of my dreams. As an only child, I had a lot of quiet time that I used to read, draw and make things. It is actually with unscheduled time that one is given the space to foster their creativity. We raised our kids like that too and they are successful creatives as well.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
As I have grown the business, I have learned a lot. It is not my first business, so I was not starting from scratch. I recommend industry research, taking workshops, joining business groups and reaching out to those already in your field, so get out there and network. You’d be surprised at the number of people who are eager to share their knowledge and experience. And honestly, rolling up your sleeves, putting in the overtime in the beginning (and maybe always) is crucial to getting to where you want your business to be. Coffee is your friend.

Our biggest obstacle lately has been supply chain issues and managing extra-busy subcontractors. We’ve been juggling a multitude of plates. Don’t quit, even on those days you want to. Just get a (big) glass of wine and a good nights sleep. Tomorrow you can handle it. Success is not a straight line but rather a series of ‘learning experiences’.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My woman-owned, full-service interior design firm, Deborah Gregg Interiors, is located in South Florida where there is great growth and opportunity – designing renovations of older homes or updates to new construction and completing the project through furnishing wallpaper, windows and finishing touches. Our extensive team of pros have the same high standards and fit perfectly into our mix. We design custom feature wall units and custom-designed furniture for our clients as well. We have a special knack for designing creative storage solutions, as storage is always an issue for Florida residents.

Our tagline is ‘Your Home Tells Your Story’. We help our clients discover their unique story, creating a personalized living space. Once we learn how they live and function in their space, only then do we determine the best course of action. Curated listening and asking important questions is an important skill that we prioritize. It provides key answers that we translate and incorporate into our design plans. Making your home or work environment distinctive is the goal. Considering everyone, including the family pet(s), who are no doubt the prized members of the family, make for a happy ending to the story. We have built a reputation for personal service, creative and unexpected ideas, going the extra mile and are well-traveled in that respect.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Ah, so many! I had a great childhood. I grew up in the wonder years where neighborhood kids knocked on your door and asked you to come out and play. It was the simple things that stand out in my memory. We had a summer cottage that I would get to bring friends to stay for the week. My BFF and I would go wander around the neighborhood by ourselves for the day, go to the beach, the amusement park and the candy store for a little bag of treats. Those were easy, delightful days where ‘stress’ was not in anyone’s vocabulary. Those summers were my sweetest memories.
