Today we’d like to introduce you to Dayana Fuentes.
Hi Dayana, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started doing my own brows back in 2018 after getting tired of having my brows thinned out at different places. I started watching videos and practicing myself, and after about a year I started getting many compliments. When people would ask who does them? I would say myself and they always asked if I could do theirs.
That’s when I immediately started to search for someone to officially teach me how to thread and after getting turned down at several salons I found an amazing mentor after searching for almost a year.
2020 was definitely a difficult and defining moment for a lot of people and that’s when I decided I was going to go for it, without much hesitation I put my dining up for sale which we had only purchased 3 months prior, my husband thought I was insane but he was supportive none the less.
I turned the dining room in my home into a little studio, separated from the rest of the house with curtains, and set up a cute station with a chair I bought off Amazon. I originally started this for fun because I liked it, I was a full-time banker at the time and my job was pretty secure or so I thought. In December of 2020 after only 3 months of doing brows on the side, I was laid off from my job, my branch was overstaffed and didn’t need me anymore.
I was devastated, I drove home that day wondering what was next but opened up my calendar for the rest of the day In hopes that maybe I’d get a few clients for the day. I ended up fully booked for the rest of the month and suddenly losing my job didn’t seem like such a bad thing but more of a sign.
After 2 months although doing brows was going great, I was still afraid of making it my full-time job forever. I panicked and went back to retail banking for about 6 weeks but something in my soul felt that’s not where I belonged. I wanted to do brows and only brows.
I quit telling my boss I was going to be self-employed by the end of the year not exactly sure how I was going to get there yet and found a part-time to put myself through school and take additional training to perfect my craft. In December of 2021, one week after graduating I got the keys to my first studio in Miramar.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t been easy, I’ve worked a lot. At some point, I worked from 8 – 1:30 went to school from 2:30 to 6 and took clients from 6-9. I’ve sacrificed a lot, especially time away from my loved ones but it’s been worth it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I do all things brows, from threading to waxing, brow tin timing lamination, and even permanent makeup like ombré powder brows.
Soon we will also be adding lash services to our menu, since they have been highly requested it’s a very therapeutic service for me to do.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Yes, nothing in life is guaranteed and sometimes you have to take a chance.
