Life & Work with David Rolland

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Rolland.

David, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I came out of the womb with a book in my hand. Some say it was a Choose Your Own Adventure paperback, others claim it was a Jughead comic book, whatever it was it started my habit of keeping words in front of my substantial nose. I started writing my own stories as a teenager in high school and my pen kept scribbling ever since whether fiction, journalism, or screenplays.

Flashforward or maybe back to 2018 when I met JJ Colagrande who offered to publish my novel The End of the Century on his publishing company, Jitney Books. JJ wanted to expand the Jitney website at www.JitneyBooks.com into more than just a digital domain where we’re hawking books. He knew I had experience in journalism, so he hired me to run the blog.

A little over four years later, we’ve run close to a thousand articles from over 50 contributors. We’re open to posting anything South Florida related whether it’s dealing with the arts, music, politics, sports, or even the weather. It’s been a pleasure to get to know plenty of new writers and read their essays, reporting, and social commentary. On JitneyBooks.com one day you might get an analysis on the Miami Heat like what you would have once read in Sports Illustrated, another day you’d meet a local band in a profile like you’d once read in Rolling Stone, and the next day you’d get some deep, philosophical “what does it all mean” piece like you’d once read in Mad Magazine.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I have lived a charmed life of constant rejection. For every success, there have been a hundred thousand failures. Now that I think about it, it’s a miracle I can even get out of bed in the late afternoon.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a writer. Check out my two novels The End of the Century and Yo-Yo, both published by Jitney Books. My music journalism appears often in the local publications Miami New Times, PureHoney Magazine, and The Atlantic Current. If you’re a completist, you can even watch the 2007 kids’ movie Finding Rin Tin Tin whose screenplay I wrote. It is currently as of December 2022 streaming for free on Peacock and Tubi. And of course, check out the website www.JitneyBooks.com regularly for oodles of wonderful reading material.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
This is a busy, distracting world we live in. I’m always honored that anyone takes the time to read something I wrote. In turn, I try to make sure that writing won’t waste their time. I try to follow that ethos with the posts we run on JitneyBooks.com. We try our darnedest to include stories you can’t find anywhere else about and for South Florida. We’re always looking for new voices as well. If you have some writing you’d like to contribute, feel free to e-mail us at jitneybooks@gmail.com.
