Life & Work with Bootsie Dawkins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bootsie Dawkins.

Hi Bootsie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up an athlete. I played football, basketball, & baseball. This helped shape a goal-driven mindset that has carried me throughout life. I received a football scholarship to attend Campbell University. After a year I transferred, then graduated from North Carolina A&T. During my time at A&T I found my passion in the camera. I fell in love with documentary filmmaking and started my journey to being a director. I began to shoot interviews in 2014. I didn’t know what direction I wanted to take it but I knew I wanted to help tell people’s stories. The name of the interview platform I created was “B Supreme Spotlight”. I transitioned into shooting wedding films shortly after.

This is when I created my company “B Supreme Productions”. The next natural progression was short films and documentaries. I wrote, directed, and acted in my originally produced series “Quarantined” from 2020-2021. During that time I hosted my first movie premiere featuring films all written & directed by me. In 2022, “B Supreme Spotlight” went from a YouTube-based interview show, to “B Supreme Spotlight Podcast” a full podcast show distributed on all major platforms.

Our Carolina-based show takes pride in showing what the south has to offer. B Supreme Spotlight has quickly become a staple in the entertainment industry. Being a show viewers can come to for entertainment or educational purposes has allowed us to create a nice niche for ourselves. Our reach starts in the south but has grown from Miami to New York. Being the host and producer of my own podcast comes with a lot of work, but I enjoy it this way. No one can tell me something can’t get done. I am self-sufficient enough to make it happen. My life mission is to tell people’s stories. I am going to do that through every format of the film possible.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road at all. The fact that I decided to be a director coming from Hamlet, NC made the road a lot more difficult than it had to be. My hometown never saw anything like this. Sometimes it’s hard for people to believe that certain levels of success can be reached because they’re not able to do it themselves. I come from a small country area. Not a lot of people see show business as a viable option. By continuing to do what I love I created a life that allows me to work every day non-stop without noticing that I am working. I tried to get people to help me get started but it was frustrating. I had to figure it out on my own.

So I decided to put myself own. That is when I learned every part of show business. With my podcast “B Supreme Spotlight” I had to network correctly. Once I began to network it changed my life for me. I have built connections that are worth much more than money. Starting a podcast is difficult in the beginning. You try so hard just to get some traction. But it is like everything else, you have to put the work in to see the results. Once you begin to see the results you’re motivated to see more. I want my podcast to impact the culture. It has to be of the culture.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a director. I shoot weddings, interviews, music videos, & documentaries. I am the host & producer of “B Supreme Spotlight Podcast”. My interviews can get in-depth.

We have went so deep that interviews have come to tears. I take pride in having good clean conversations with people on camera that don’t feel like an interrogation. My goal is to have the number one podcast in the world without any clickbait type of content. I highlight the good side of people on my platform. I show how they are making a positive impact on society. As the podcast grows more and more of my documentaries will begin to release. My special gift is giving a voice to the voiceless. Everyone has a story. Sometimes they’re just waiting on their chance at the spotlight.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to follow my passion no matter what. I’m not a person that can suck it up and work a job I hate. I feel I’m wasting my life in that situation. I’ve stated that my calling is to help tell people stories.

So I feel if I’m doing anything other than that I’m doing a disservice to myself and God. I was blessed with a unique skill set that is meant to help the world. My way of expressing myself is to create. So I must continue to do this forever.
