Today we’d like to introduce you to Ariel Gonzalez.
Ariel, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey began in the 90s when my parents got me coloring books and crayons. Over the last 30 years it’s been a wild but amazing ride building myself to be the artist that little 5-year-old kid always wanted to be.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
To say it’s been a smooth road would be bs. Being a creative in this dog-eat-dog world has been the most challenging thing I’ve ever done. I’d say the biggest hurdle to get over was finding my voice in this big art world. Like everything it’s still a huge work in progress but with full assurance I can say I know who I am as an artist.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m known for my trippy, distorted, colorful and fun world. I’ve been heavily inspired by street art and pop art all my life and pay an ode to that in whatever I make. I’m most proud of going outside my comfort zone and experimenting with more mediums than just painting. Over the last year I’ve been experimenting with wood cut outs and most recently plexiglass
How do you think about happiness?
Color makes me happy. Making my ideas come to life makes me happy. I’m my own worst critic (thanks gifted program) so when I really execute an idea the way I want it to be, that’s when I’m happiest. Community makes me happy as well. Knowing you’re not alone in this struggle that is trying to be somebody in a sea of everybody. Sharing similar perspectives while also learning new ones makes me happy.
