Life & Work with Angie Maya of Boca Raton Design District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angie Maya.

Hi Angie , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started my entrepreneurial journey at 23 when my husband and I traveled to China to find suppliers and launch our first business. We didn’t have much experience, just passion, curiosity, and a strong work ethic.

Over the next 20 years, we built and managed several brands in the motorcycle industry, developing and selling a wide range of products. I handled everything related to graphic design, marketing, and eCommerce, from branding and online sales to digital strategy.

After two decades in that space, I felt called to do something with deeper meaning. That’s when I found Her 2nd Chance Inc., a nonprofit that helps women in recovery rebuild their lives through meaningful employment. Today, I serve as the Operations Director. I oversee day-to-day operations, manage our fulfillment projects, and support the women in our program as they work toward stability and independence.

It’s been incredibly fulfilling to take the skills I developed in business and use them to help change lives.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all, but every challenge helped shape who I am today.

As a Hispanic woman and a non-native English speaker, one of my first struggles was learning a new language while trying to build a business from the ground up. I didn’t have formal training in many of the skills I needed, so I had to teach myself everything, from graphic design and website development to coding, marketing, and B2B business development and management.

Running our own business meant constantly learning, adapting, and wearing many hats. It wasn’t always easy, but I was determined to grow and never stopped pushing myself to learn something new. Those experiences gave me not only technical skills, but also the confidence and resilience I bring into my work today at Her 2nd Chance. I know what it feels like to fight for opportunity, and that’s why I’m so passionate about creating them for others.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the Operations Director at Her 2nd Chance, Inc. We are a Boca Raton-based nonprofit social enterprise that provides transitional employment opportunities (at our eCommerce gift shops) and support programs for women in recovery from substance use.

I oversee day-to-day operations, manage our fulfillment projects, and support the women in our program as they work toward stability and independence.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5–10 years, personalized products will become even more popular, with customers using simple tools and AI to design items that reflect who they are. People are moving away from mass-produced gifts and looking for something meaningful and personal—like custom mugs, tumblers, and cards.

There’s also a growing demand for products with purpose. Shoppers want to support brands that make a difference. At Her 2nd Chance Inc., every item we sell supports women in recovery and shares a message of hope. As technology grows, creativity and social impact will shape how people shop. It won’t just be about buying products, it’ll be about connecting with them.
