Today we’d like to introduce you to Amelia De Vita
Hi Amelia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I always knew I wanted to be in media, but I wasn’t sure exactly where, so I ended up doing a little bit of everything! I worked in radio as a producer after University and then in a helicopter filming and presenting television and radio traffic reports in both Brisbane and Sydney. I eventually ended up in America working for CBS Radio, running the traffic reports department for all of their stations, and then I got my own show on The Shark! From there, I was picked up by BIG 105.9 FM. Now I have a classic rock show that runs from 10am to 3pm Monday through Friday!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, all things worth doing aren’t easy. But I can certainly say it was all worth it. I didn’t know anyone here, so breaking into the industry was a difficult thing to do. I owe it all to Rob Morris, a program director who saw something in me when I applied at CBS back in the day and Dave Hill who took a chance on an Aussie to rock out with South Florida on the daily!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Being a radio DJ/Host is so unique. It is an industry full of creatives and visionaries, hilarious personalities and hard workers and I’m so grateful to be a part of it all.
Daily life for a radio DJ like me looks like; heading into the office and preparing a show, presenting it, filming and editing content for social media, meeting with our sales team to discuss clients and our program director to discuss upcoming promotions on the air. And then some of us prepare shows that we produce and present in other markets as well. Sometimes we have cool guests that come into the studio to interview, sometimes we broadcast our shows from on location, like at Universal Studios! And other times we go to host an event or festival after our radio show is done. No one day is the same, we are always very busy and personally, I wouldn’t have it any other way!
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
It’s going to be hard work. I would often work multiple jobs at once in Australia. I would sleep on my aunt’s floor between long shifts as she lived closer than if I was to drive home in between. Nothing will just “come to you” in this industry and you have to be willing to put in long hours for little or no pay in the beginning. It’s definitely a labor of love to have a career in radio and television and you really do have to remember that to drive you forward on some of the harder days.
