Life & Work with Alyssa Castillo of Miami / South Florida

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Castillo.

Hi Alyssa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey as a content creator began with a simple conversation with my husband, who was my boyfriend at the time, Andrew Young. I remember telling him that I wanted to become a Content Creator, even though I had no idea where that dream would eventually take me.

He took me on my very first trip to Atlanta, Georgia, and we stayed directly across from Lenox Square Mall. I remember being fascinated by the atmosphere and seeing so many successful, wealthy people. It ignited something inside of me. I had never experienced an environment like that before, and it inspired me to create a life filled with possibilities, growth, and opportunities.

At the time, I was working in nightlife as a promoter and atmosphere model for clubs. While I enjoyed it, I remember thinking, There has to be more to life than this. I wanted to build something meaningful and create a career that aligned with my creativity and passions.

What many people don’t know is that I wasn’t just working in front of the camera. I also discovered that I loved the creative and business side of the industry. I worked alongside artists and DJs, helping them elevate their brands through marketing, image development, bookings, and event promotion. I also had the opportunity to assist in coordinating a club appearance, which gave me an early understanding of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into building a personal brand and creating memorable experiences for an audience.

Looking back, those experiences were some of my first introductions to content strategy, storytelling, and audience engagement—skills that would later become the foundation of my career as a content creator.

Before becoming a full-time creator, I dedicated 11 years of my life to serving in the United States Navy as a Logistics Specialist. My military experience shaped who I am today in ways I never expected. One of the most unforgettable experiences was training alongside Marines and Special Forces in a helicopter underwater escape exercise. We were required to escape a submerged helicopter while blindfolded, both upright and upside down, through a small window. It was one of the most intense experiences of my life, but it taught me how to remain calm under pressure, adapt quickly, and trust myself even in uncertain situations. Those lessons continue to guide me today, both personally and professionally.

After leaving the military, I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology while also raising my three children, Ladé, AJ, and Shaniya as a single mother. Transitioning into content creation was completely outside of my comfort zone, but I was determined to learn and create a new path for myself.

I signed up for small creator platforms that paid very little—sometimes just five cents for a like or one dollar for an entire post. While it may sound insignificant, those opportunities became my classroom. I used every assignment to study brands, understand their voice, research their products, learn their aesthetic, and discover how to tell authentic stories through content.

I focused on perfecting my craft instead of focusing solely on the money.

I actually started creating content right before COVID. My very first content creator photo was taken in Atlanta while wearing a yellow Victoria’s Secret jumpsuit. I wasn’t working with any brands yet, and I had never participated in any campaigns. However, my previous experience attending events and working in nightlife had already taught me how to present myself professionally and connect with audiences.

I remember my husband saying, “This is your first picture as a content creator.” Looking back now, it feels like it was just yesterday.

From there, I continued working with emerging brands, joined multiple creator platforms, and eventually started receiving invitations to larger and more established programs.

Today, I am incredibly grateful to be part of several amazing creator communities, including LTK, ApexDrop, the Sephora Glam Team, the Ulta Beauty Creator Program, and the Victoria’s Secret Creator Program.

Throughout my journey, I have had the privilege of collaborating with incredible brands such as L’Oréal, Lancôme, Valentino, Maybelline, Kiss Lashes, Giovanni, Ralph Lauren Fragrances, Smirnoff, and many others.

Most recently, I was invited by Trulieve to create content surrounding Georgia’s SB220 legislation and its implementation, which is expanding access for registered medical cannabis patients throughout the state.

More than anything, this journey has taught me that success is built one opportunity at a time. What began as a dream, a single photo in front of Lenox Square Mall, and a willingness to learn has evolved into a career that allows me to tell stories, build relationships with brands I admire, and inspire others who may be afraid to start.

If there is one thing I have learned, it’s this: you do not have to have everything figured out before you begin. Sometimes all it takes is one decision, one photo, and the courage to believe in yourself before anyone else does.

My journey is proof that you can reinvent yourself at any stage of life. From serving my country, earning my degree, raising three children, and starting over in an entirely new industry, every chapter has prepared me for where I am today.

I am incredibly grateful for every opportunity, every lesson, and every brand that has trusted me to bring their stories to life. I am excited to continue growing, creating, and seeing where this journey takes me next.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it definitely has not been a smooth road, and honestly, I think that’s one of the biggest misconceptions people have about content creation. Many people only see the finished product, but they don’t always see the amount of work, sacrifice, and resilience that happens behind the scenes.

One of my biggest struggles in the beginning was truly allowing myself to see myself as a content creator. I also had to learn how to overcome the opinions and expectations of people around me.

I remember a time when I had multiple products to photograph and content to create every single day. Posting that frequently wasn’t the norm back then, and some people around me became irritated or didn’t understand why I was so committed to it.

As I started growing, I realized that not everyone is comfortable watching you evolve. Sometimes people want to keep you in the version of yourself they have always known, and when you begin to change, grow, or pursue something different, they may see you differently. They may not understand the sacrifices you’re making behind the scenes, and sometimes they may even question whether you belong in certain spaces.

One of the hardest lessons I had to learn was that growth can sometimes mean outgrowing certain friendships and relationships. At the time, it was difficult, but now I understand that personal growth often requires you to become comfortable being misunderstood.

Another challenge I’ve discovered is navigating affiliate marketing programs. Over time, I have noticed that some affiliate programs lack transparency in how creators are credited for the traffic they generate. Creators work extremely hard to build trust with their audience and drive customers to a brand’s website, but there are times when tracking systems make it difficult to know whether those efforts are being accurately attributed. It has taught me the importance of understanding contracts, reading the fine print, and protecting the value of my work.

I have also learned that many brands do not fully understand the amount of work that goes into content creation. People often see a single photo or a short video, but they don’t see everything that happens beforehand.

As creators, we invest our own money into wardrobe, makeup, hair, props, lighting, equipment, subscriptions, and set design to create a specific mood and tell a story that aligns with a brand’s vision. We spend hours planning, filming, editing, and sometimes standing outside in the heat just to capture the perfect shot.

Content creators are often the photographer, producer, videographer, creative director, editor, marketer, and project manager all at once.

Because of this, one of the most challenging aspects of the industry has been learning to advocate for myself and understand my value. There are times when creators are asked to produce extensive deliverables—multiple photos and videos—for compensation that does not reflect the amount of time, creativity, and resources required to execute a campaign successfully.

Another challenge has been burnout. Burnout can happen very quickly in this industry. There are moments when you pour your heart, time, and energy into creating something beautiful, only to receive very little engagement or acknowledgment from the brand itself. That can be discouraging.

When you are a one-woman team responsible for every aspect of production, it is easy to become mentally and creatively exhausted.

However, every one of these challenges has taught me something valuable. They have taught me to set boundaries, advocate for myself, protect my creativity, and recognize my worth.

Most importantly, they have taught me that consistency matters more than perfection.

Content creation is not simply taking pictures and posting online. It is running a business, building a brand, telling stories, and continuously reinventing yourself while remaining authentic to who you are.

Even through the difficult moments, I would not change my journey because every challenge has helped shape the creator and businesswoman I am today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a content creator, digital storyteller, and creative strategist who specializes in beauty, lifestyle, travel, wellness, and luxury-inspired content. My work is centered around creating authentic stories that allow audiences to connect with brands in a genuine and meaningful way.

I don’t simply create content to showcase a product—I create experiences that help bring a brand’s vision to life. Every campaign I work on begins with research. I take the time to understand a brand’s history, mission, aesthetic, and values so that the content I create feels intentional and aligned with who they are.

What many people may not realize is that content creation is an entire production process. I wear many hats throughout every project. I serve as the creative director, photographer, videographer, producer, editor, copywriter, and marketer all at once. From selecting wardrobe and props to choosing locations and setting the mood, every detail matters.

What sets me apart is that I trust my intuition throughout the creative process.

Sometimes I take a little longer than expected to create content because I don’t see products the same way most people do. I don’t simply see an item that needs to be photographed—I try to understand its energy, its story, and how it aligns with the brand behind it. I have learned not to rush that process.

There is always a moment when I know everything has come together. It’s hard to explain, but as a creator, I can feel it. I know when the lighting is right, when the mood is right, when the story is right, and when it’s finally time to shoot. If I rush before that moment arrives, the content never feels authentic to me.

One of the things I am most proud of is honoring that creative instinct instead of forcing a result.

For me, success is not simply about posting content quickly. It is about creating something that evokes emotion and leaves a lasting impression. When I see the final photo or video and think, This is the shot. This is the feeling. This is the story I wanted to tell, that is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

I am also proud of the journey that brought me here. From serving 11 years in the United States Navy, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, raising three children, and building a career in an entirely new industry, every chapter of my life has contributed to the creator I am today.

I have been fortunate to collaborate with incredible brands such as L’Oréal, Lancôme, Valentino, Maybelline, Kiss Lashes, Giovanni, Ralph Lauren Fragrances, Smirnoff, and many others, while also being part of communities and programs including LTK, ApexDrop, the Sephora Glam Team, the Ulta Beauty Creator Program, and the Victoria’s Secret Creator Program.

Above all, I want people to know that I am not just a content creator—I am a storyteller. My goal is to create content that makes people feel something, while helping brands build authentic connections with their audiences.

That ability to blend strategy, intuition, and storytelling is what I believe truly sets me apart.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Without a doubt, my biggest supporters have always been my family.
My husband, Andrew, has been one of my greatest cheerleaders from the very beginning. He believed in my vision before I fully knew what that vision would become. One of the moments that stands out most to me was our trip to Atlanta, where he encouraged me to take what would become my very first photo as a content creator. That moment represents the beginning of this entire journey.
My children, AJ, Ladé, and Shaniya, are also a huge source of motivation for me. They remind me every day why I continue to work hard, pursue my dreams, and show them that it is never too late to reinvent yourself and create a life you are proud of.
My mother, Jacqueline, and my father, John, have also been incredible sources of support throughout my life. Their encouragement and belief in me have helped shape the person I am today.
Over the years, I have intentionally kept my circle very small. One thing I have learned is that not everyone is meant to accompany you through every season of your life, and that is okay.
I have also been blessed to have an incredible mentor and spiritual mother, Daniela Abby, who has had a profound impact on my personal growth. She has helped keep me grounded, spiritually connected, and reminded me of the importance of leading with love, kindness, and understanding.
One of the greatest lessons she has taught me is that good character will always outweigh anything else in this world. Success, recognition, and accomplishments are meaningful, but who you are as a person will always matter most. Character is the foundation that allows you to reach your highest potential.
She has also taught me to remember that I am more than my title, my career, or my accomplishments. At my core, I am a soul having a human experience, and that perspective helps me stay grounded throughout life’s highs and lows.
I also believe that every person who has entered my life, whether for a brief season or many years, deserves some level of credit. Some relationships have been positive, while others have been challenging, but every interaction has taught me something valuable.
The positive relationships have inspired me, motivated me, and reminded me of the power of kindness. Sometimes something as simple as a stranger offering a genuine compliment can completely change someone’s day, and I have been fortunate to experience many of those moments.
The more difficult relationships have also shaped me. They have taught me resilience, emotional strength, and the importance of protecting my peace. Rather than viewing those experiences negatively, I choose to see them as lessons that have helped me grow into a stronger version of myself.
One of the greatest lessons I have learned throughout this journey is that it is okay to be alone sometimes. There is strength in becoming comfortable with your own company and discovering who you truly are without outside influence.
Today, I surround myself with people who uplift, inspire, and challenge me to become a better person every day.
At the end of the day, my success has never been a one-person journey. It has been built on love, encouragement, meaningful connections, and the lessons I have gathered from every person who has crossed my path.
I carry those lessons with me in everything I do, both as a creator and as a person.
