Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Gulliver
Hi Alexis, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I think back about the start of my yoga journey, I think its relevant to point out the fact that “yoga” will meet you where ever you currently are in your life. When I entered my first yoga class, I was at the gym, and all I was really looking for was a good workout. I ended up in a Power Yoga class I found to be incredibly physically challenging. The long holds in poses made my muscles burn, the deep, forward bends to stretch the hamstrings were totally unobtainable for me, let alone the steady, consistent breath the teacher kept alluding to. I was craving a strong class that made me sweat. If I had gone into a meditation style or yin yoga class, I would not have gotten what I needed in order to come back. Then the more I went, yoga slowly started to reveal more and more of the subtle layers the entire practice has to offer. Now if a class is too “hard” or just a workout, I don’t enjoy it as much. Yoga meets me where am I and that is in a place where I want more peace and feeling of relaxation in my life.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think if it had been a smooth road, I would not still be practicing. People continue to repeat habits when they see growth and reward. You aren’t forced to grow unless there is a little struggle. I have had set backs like injuries, and days or even months where I was feeling uninspired, but the challenge of still getting on the mat at least for a few minutes every day helped me to overcome those challenges on the mat. Which in turn make everyday annoyances more easy to deal with. When do you hard things, you get better at doing hard things. Life is full of hard things, so why not practice dealing with it on the mat, doing something you love.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a yoga teacher, wellness consultant, and author of a book: ALIVE: Path to Personal Transformation. I work with groups, individuals, and multi-national companies to help make yoga and the philosophy of a balanced lifestyle easily accessible and effective for everyone.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I lived in Istanbul, Turkey for 17 years and during that time I had a TV show. I did 40 episodes, giving yoga classes to advanced and beginner students. It was all dubbed over in Turkish and is hilarious to watch now.
