Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Rushin.
Shelby, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, a graduate of Dillard High School. I have three sisters and 1 brother. Married with two beautiful children. My Mom is a retired Nurse and my Father is a retired radio executive who was at the helm of South Florida’s heritage radio station WEDR-JAMZ, for almost 40 years! So, I guess one would say he definitely had an influence in my life. I would agree. Besides, being a nurse like my Mother didn’t seem to be much fun! As life would have it, I went off to college after graduating high school and majored in Mass Communication, with a focus on advertising/sales. However, after doing my internship, I quickly realized that sales were not where I wanted to actually work – BORING! I started in radio after graduating from (Bethune Cookman University) college. Prior to graduation, I interned at WEDR-99Jamz. My 1st job was working as a Sunday morning board operator. Soon after, I was promoted and/or given the opportunity to work on-air part-time. I worked swing shifts, filling in where I was needed. The opportunity presented itself and I was eventually offered the job as full-time midday host, 10 am -2 pm Monday thru Friday and the rest was history. I was the midday personality for 17 plus years! Now, working at ANY radio station as an on-air talent, in your home town for 17 years is almost unheard of. Doing the same air-shift is even rarer. I’ve had the opportunity to interview many, near and abroad. My voice has been heard endorsing various brands such as Olay, Disney, T-Mobile, Old Navy, Apple and Wendy’s, just to name a few. I am a true Floridian, who loves South Florida and it’s diversity I have worked with many organizations over the years, giving back to our community. Philanthropy is a major catalyst for making the world a better place and it’s something I enjoy immensely. Building relationships and bridges is something I pride myself on. I truly believe that is the key to longevity and success. I recently transitioned to WHQT Hot105-FM as one half the afternoon show, “The Show,” with Alex “Big Lip” Chisholm, Weekdays, 2- 7 pm.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Fortunately, there weren’t many challenges. They do exist, trust me. I was just able to avoid them until January 2018, when I was terminated from my post of 17 years. My advice to those who are just now beginning the journey would be. Always be yourself. Be persistent and consistent. Keep in mind that your reputation will always precede you, good or bad.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Radio Personality – WHQT Hot105-FM – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am one half of the afternoon show, “The Show” on Hot105-FM, weekdays, 2-7pm entertaining, informing, uplifting and educating the South Florida Community through music and commentary. Being a mentor and being an inspiration for other women are just a few things I am most proud of.
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Always be intentional! Be determined and focused. Never compromise.
