Life & Work with Deja Williams

Hi Deja, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story starts as a young girl in Miami who lacked confidence and didn’t think she was special enough to catch the attention of those around her. She has now blossomed into a young adult who knows her power and believes in herself to accomplish great things. I fell into my passion of doing nails and making music. Lots of challenges come with the territory but it’s all part of what makes life worth living.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A lot of the struggles were internal. Should I do this, should I do that… Am I good enough to go for this, are people going to support me… should I give up? These are the type of stresses that would cross my mind, and they still do today occasionally. I had to deal with family, not understanding my vision and doubting the faith I have in myself to succeed. That was a little rough for me but honestly, time heals all. With unconditional love for yourself, patience and faith, your goals have no choice but to come to fruition.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a nail tech and a musical artist. My music falls under the R&B/Hip Hop genre. I’m just getting my feet wet with the music, but I specialize in doing nails. I’ve been working in the beauty industry for a little over two years. What I’m most proud of, both with my music and nails is the effect my work has on other people. Seeing my nail clients smile while taking pictures of their new nails and hearing my friends or strangers hype my music brings me the most joy. I’m spreading happiness with my talents, which feeds my happiness as well. What sets me apart from others? My honest answer to that is value is in the eye of the beholder. How can anyone sit and talk about how much better they are than the next person? I know that my style is not for everyone and the people who know me love me. Judge for yourself!

What are your plans for the future?
My plans for my future in the beauty industry are to become one of the most sought out nail techs in the country. I hope to run my own salon and train other men and women who want to learn the craft. For my music, my only goal is to keep creating good music. I would love to become recognized on a global level and sell-out shows one day but even if it never gets there, my soul is fulfilled just getting the music out there for myself and others to enjoy.
