Today we’d like to introduce you to Aurelia Edwards.
Aurelia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I founded Pink Scissors Planning in 2010 in order to channel my creative ambitions into a passionate endeavor. My first taste of event production started at the young age of 4 years old when I planned a surprise party for myself. See the surprise was actually for my parents who had no idea they were hosting a birthday party when my playmates arrived at 6pm sharp. I calmly stated, “oh yeah, I invited them to my birthday party!”? Since then, that calm demeanor has proved to be the essence of my events. I enjoy the intensity that surrounds executing my client’s vision along with the liberation to be creatively energetic.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t necessarily call it a bumpy road, but there were definitely a few pot holes along the way. I left a secure career in chemistry to follow a passion. The biggest struggle was definitely financial. Having a savings to pull from helped to buffer the growing pains of the business but I can honestly say it wasn’t easy and there were days when I questioned if I made the right decision leaving my salaried position with benefits to be a self-employed, female business owner. My advice to women starting off would be… don’t give up! Be prepared to face volatility in the growth phase when creating a start-up business. In my experience, business boomed in my first few months which gave me a false sense of security, then it quickly plateaued and I was forced to learn quickly that building a business and a brand requires stamina. It took about 3 years to see consistent annual profits. It’s very easy to get discouraged during that dynamic time period but remain focused and determined and you will reap the fruits of your labor.
Please tell us about Pink Scissors Planning.
I am an event planner. Easy and simple. I am an extension of my client – managing logistics, budgets, vendors and any other facet of an event from start to finish. I’m detail oriented and truly care that my client’s vision is executed as precisely and seamlessly as possible.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
One of my favorite books that has truly made a difference in my life has been Happier than God: Turn Ordinary Life into an Extraordinary Experience, by Neale Donald Walsch. A total must read! It allowed me to experience life the way I wanted to experience it, by giving me the tools to realize that I am in total control of my happiness and my destiny.
