Life and Work with Alyssa Varas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Varas.

Alyssa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began practicing yoga regularly when I was 15 as a means to relieve some academic stress. I committed fully to yoga as a career path when I was 19 after experiencing first-hand the mental and physical benefits a regular practice brings. By combining mindful breathing with mindful movement, yoga has helped me take complete control of my body and become grounded, strong and open in the face of challenges and stress.

I believe a regular yoga practice–paired with mindful, healthy living–can lead to a blissful life. So, I decided to share my passion and dedicate my time to creating a more peaceful and prosperous society by spreading yoga and wellness guidance.

I created Blyss Yoga in 2019 with the intention of developing an empowering community of yogis that inspires and encourages others to develop their own practice. Through this platform, I want to bring awareness to the connection between the physical, spiritual and mental worlds and bring bliss to the yoga community and, ultimately, the world.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve been on this journey for a short time, and the road so far has been paved with tiny, consecutive bumps. My first real challenge was truly believing in myself and in the future I wanted to create. Though I was prospecting potential clients, creating my social media presence and my website and technically moving forward, I knew that I wasn’t fully sold on my ability to make this passion into a successful business. I knew that to truly get the success I wanted, I had to be completely, 100% committed and sold on my decision. Once I believed in myself, the other obstacles I faced became stepping stones to my ultimate goal.

I know the long road ahead will be full of challenges. But, because of my belief in my future, I am completely confident that I will reach whatever goals I set for my business and myself. When I am faced with a challenge, like “How am I going to create valuable content?” or “How do I develop a community?” or “What if all my prospects reject me?” I just think, “My future self already figured this out. So, I’ll figure it out.”

If you’re just beginning in your journey in starting a new business, forming new habits or developing a relationship, the most important step you can take is to sell yourself completely on the fact that you will be successful in your journey. Once you know this, the road will pave itself.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a yoga instructor, and, as someone who never played a sport or danced growing up, I specifically enjoy helping beginners to expand their practice and improve alignment.

I hope Blyss Yoga will be known as an educational platform that helps people live a more full, prosperous life through learning about mindful practices including yoga, meditation, nutrition, self-development and spirituality among other subjects. I am working on creating an online membership platform at the moment, and I look forward to growing Blyss Yoga into an international community and brand.

Blyss Yoga is a space created with the intention of spreading guidance, encouragement and bliss through yoga discipline and other wellness practices around the world. It aims to inspire yogis and all those seeking to grow in this spiritual practice. Blyss Yoga will strive to bring awareness to the spiritual, mental and physical benefits of yoga. We are a strong, uplifting community that is always looking to make new connections and learn from others.

We are on a mission to create a more peaceful and prosperous society through health and mindfulness.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
No one in my family practices yoga, but my work ethic definitely runs in the genes. My dad dropped out of high school at age 17 to build his family’s oil company, and every day I would see him go to work for as many hours as needed to grow the company and keep things running smoothly. When my dad passed away when I was 9, I witnessed my mom, who studied elementary education, start her own salon from the ground up. I would keep her company after hours as she took inventory, cleaned and confirmed appointments with clients, all while raising my brother and me.

Because I was surrounded by hard workers as a child, I always tried my best in everything I did, specifically in school. I believe my parents–intentionally or maybe unintentionally–instilled a high level of work ethic in me.
