Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Shirah Benarde of West Palm Beach

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Shirah Benarde. Check out our conversation below.

Shirah, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day involve walking my dog, having my iced coffee, meditating and getting in a workout!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Shirah Benarde, the CEO and Co-Founder of NightCap. I started NightCap after my friend’s drink was spiked, and I came up with the idea for our first product, the NightCap Scrunchie, in a dream when I was just 16. What began as a simple invention has grown into a movement: today, NightCap products have protected millions of people in over 70 countries, we’ve been featured on Shark Tank, and we’re working alongside legislators and advocates to make going out safer.

We recently helped pass a groundbreaking California law requiring bars to provide drink covers (AB 2375). Beyond products, we’re producing educational campaigns and survivor-led documentaries to spark systemic change. We recently launched our short documentary, When Is It Enough?, which highlights the real stories of survivors and pushes forward legislative action. At NightCap, it’s about making sure people feel safe, seen, and supported wherever they go out.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My mom would always suggest different career paths for me. Any time I mentioned wanting to become a therapist or an orthodontist, she was open to all of my different ideas. Her openness made me understand how we can have anything we desire in life, as long as we work hard for it.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You are beautiful just the way you are and everything is going to workout better than you imagined.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say that my dog Rosie, building my business and being present in my relationships matters the most to me.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m outside, in the sunlight on a walk or getting some form of movement in.
