We recently had the chance to connect with Shantel Davis and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shantel , thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me is like an ordinary day. I get up everyday in the morning and thank Jehovah for allowing me to see another day. I also say to myself nothing that is negative is going to get in my way. I always tend to keep it positive. I always find something that I want to do whether it is sewing, hanging out with friends and family, or to go for a walk. I always find something to do on my normal days.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Shantel Davis, I am from Miami Florida. I am a Seamstress and Fashion Designer. I also do Alterations and repairs. I am also an Entrepreneur who sells my latest designs on Poshmark, Mercari, Depop, Offerup and in Person. My Brand Colors Are Beautiful has begun back in October 2, 2012. In 2019 I decided to get my Business and Brand registered on SunBiz.org. When I sew my clothing for different shapes and sizes I always have a vision where I would like my clothing designs comes to life. When I cut and sew my clothing designs it’s like putting a puzzle together. What makes my brand so unique is my clothing designs are one of a kind. It’s one where you don’t find in retail stores. Recently I got back into Consigning my clothing designs in a Consignment Store in my area.
I also design clothing for Women’s, Men’s, Children’s and Plus Size. We all know that we all need clothing, all shapes and sizes. I always believe that “ All Body Types needs to be celebrated not just Skinny body.” It means that everyone can dress in style and look their very best. I am working on my Fall and Winter Collections right now to finish up this year of 2025. The meaning behind Colors Are Beautiful is wearing clothing with confidence and comfort. One that will make you stand out from the crowd. My clothing is filled with colors, design prints and boldness, because without color it will be boring.
I am also a Sewing Teacher so basically I teach people who are interested how to sew because it’s a lot of fun. I want my students to test the waters, see what it feels like to sew their own clothing without paying an arm and a leg for clothing. I am always patient with my students especially for the ones who are beginners or just started for the first time. My price range for my sewing class is very reasonable. Plus I give my Students homework to keep on practicing their sewing. When my students keep on practicing their sewing skills that will help them not only to get better at it but to grow as well. I don’t leave my students empty-handed. When the student completes my sewing class because they have learned enough to do it on their own, they will get a certificate of completion through Regular Mail, Via Email and Via Text. I always celebrate with my Students letting them know that I am so proud of them.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
My Mom is the main person that taught me about work and sticking to it. She was my Mom and Dad andI am so proud of her and I love her so much. But most of all is Jehovah God is the one that is teaching me everyday. I always believe that you can never know enough because you are always learning something new. With me on personal level, I can never know enough, I am always learning something new.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I almost gave up on my fashion design career for good. There are 10 reasons why:
1. I was second guessing myself, including my designs.
2. I was thinking that my designs will never sell.
3. I have been hearing that other small businesses has failed and that moved me to have those same negative thoughts.
4. I didn’t want to owe more money than I make.
5. I was putting out and not getting anything in.
6. I was attracting the wrong people towards my work of art.
7. I didn’t have a wide audience.
8. No one supports Fashion Design just like other careers.
9. I was told to be realistic and have something to fall back on just in case. I was thinking, they are right, I need to give up on this futile career.
10. People spend money on other things not on clothing designs.
These are all the thoughts that I had in my career choice. But I learned by viewing a show by Dhar Mann he said “ If you like to do what you love, the money will always follow.” It means that sales will happen, it might not be as soon as you think but it will happen someday because everything in due time. So that’s how I look at my Fashion Brand now. I also learn that people will buy when they are ready.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I admire my Mom and my Sisters because they are hard workers, smart workers and most of all Godly Women. They don’t let anything get them stressed out. My Mom is the main one. She never lets anything or anyone stress her out, she always lives one day at a time. She is strong so I got it from her. She always taught me and my sisters hard work. Nothing is handed to you. Above all I admire Jehovah God because he is a God of love, kindness, patience, goodness and he is loyal. He is also impartial.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
When I am gone, I would like people to remember me as a good person. I also want them to tell others that I am humble. In other words I don’t want people to remember how I died, I want them to remember the way that I lived. But then again being a Jehovah’s Witness I do believe in the resurrection so I have that hope that I will be brought back to life. My favorite scripture is Revelation 21:4 which states “And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” So that scripture always gives me comfort because it’s telling me that better times are ahead.
