Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Manolo Doreste of Coral Gables

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Manolo Doreste. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Manolo, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
I love this question! I would absolutely hire myself (duh). I need someone to take my new headshots. Besides that I bring over two decades of experience and an eye for detail that comes from photographing thousands of moments that matter. I know how to put people at ease and make the process enjoyable while still delivering images that feel cinematic and timeless. I deeply invested in the experience as much as the final product and I am invested in making sure my clients feel taken care of from start to finish.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Manolo Doreste, a Miami and New York based photographer who has been telling stories through my camera for over 20 years. I’m Cuban American, born into a culture that loves connection, celebration and a good dose of style, which definitely shows up in my work. My photography is built on three pillars which are families, weddings and advertising and I approach each one with the same mix of professionalism, creativity and heart. Whether I’m capturing the quiet beauty of a maternity session, the energy of a wedding dance floor or a bold campaign for a brand, I’m always focused on creating images that feel timeless and personal. I travel often, love collaborating with other creatives and take pride in making the entire experience as enjoyable as the final photographs.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
One moment that really shaped how I see the world came from my time in the theatre. I started out on stage performing, learning how to connect with an audience and tell a story in a way that feels real. Then I moved into stagecraft and got to see the other side, the lighting, the sets, the way every detail is designed to guide the audience’s eye and emotions. That combination of performing and understanding the mechanics behind the scenes taught me that storytelling is both an art and a craft. It is about emotion, but it is also about building the world where that emotion lives. That perspective has never left me and it is the foundation of how I approach photography today.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self to trust the process and not be afraid to take the long road. Every challenge, every twist and turn, and even the moments that felt like setbacks are shaping you into the person and artist you are meant to be. Keep your curiosity alive, stay true to your vision, and know that your passion will carry you through anything.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
It is a version of me, but when you get to know me you see that I am much more flawed. I think we all show a polished side in public, especially in a creative industry, but the real me is a mix of strengths, quirks, and imperfections. Those flaws are part of what makes me human and they are often where the most authentic connections happen.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I can give my best even without praise, especially when it comes to projects I care about deeply. Some of my favorite moments have been working on personal projects at home or creating styled shoots just because the idea inspired me. There is something satisfying about seeing a vision come to life for no other reason than the joy of making it happen. At the same time, I have learned that I also thrive under pressure. A clear deadline and the knowledge that others are counting on me often push me to reach an even higher level.
