Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Liz Seligman of Miami

We recently had the chance to connect with Liz Seligman and have shared our conversation below.

Liz, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Integrity is most important to me because it guides every action and decision. Energy and intelligence are valuable, but without integrity they can be misused. With integrity, I know I am staying true to my values and earning the trust of others.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Liz Seligman, the founder of Island Life Events. What began in 2013 as a small event planning company in the Florida Keys has blossomed into a thriving business serving both the Keys and Miami.

In 2016, my daughter Sarah joined me as managing partner, and together we’ve built not only unforgettable weddings and corporate events, but also a true family legacy. Clients often tell us they love the dynamic of a mother-daughter team, and we take pride in pouring our heart, creativity, and dedication into every event we plan.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
A moment that truly shaped how I see the world was when I first started launched Island Life Events. I realized that if I truly wanted it to happen, I had the power to make it happen. That shift from dreaming to believing in my own ability changed everything for me. It taught me that vision, determination, and hard work, I could create the life and business I imagined.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me resilience, patience, and humility in ways success never could. Success feels wonderful, but it doesn’t always push you to grow. Challenge forces you to dig deep, to find the strength you didn’t know you had, and to appreciate even the smallest victories. It gave me compassion for myself and for others and to be so grateful for what I have achieved.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Not always. I’m an introvert by temperament, yet I built a successful business that thrives on social connection. That contrast shaped how I work. I lean into moments of genuine connection with clients and vendor / venue partners, but I’m deliberate about boundaries and replenishing my energy. Being introverted doesn’t make me less capable of leading a social business, it means I do it in my own intentional way.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I see our clients truly happy and know that my kids and grandkids are thriving. Both my family and my work bring me joy, and when they are in harmony life is good!
