Hi Guy, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Every time I’m playing the cello. I always lose sense of time because I get sucked into the creative space
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Guy Michel. Born and raised in Haiti. Started the cello at the age of 5 by playing Haitian and African styles through improvisation. That’s a big part of my life now as a professional. My act is unique because it’s mostly live improvisation over popular and not so popular tracks and there’s usually a hint of my Haitian roots. I created The Performing Arts Institute to mentor musicians who want to explore other genres outside of the traditional classical music and orchestra world. It’s for cellists who want to learn to improvise, musicians to learn stage presence and how to turn their music passion into a full time career
I’m also starting my very first own showcase called “The Cello Assassin Experience” which begins in Anchorage, Alaska on September 28th.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Trust. It’s easy to break and really hard (if ever) to get back
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I’ve gotten discouraged plenty of times but never thought about giving up. It sounds strange but my dream was too big to give up. I always say regret is much worse than trying something and failing at it
