We recently had the chance to connect with Daniel Newcomb and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Daniel, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I’m definitely wandering. My path has broken off trails, side streets, and alleys at times.
My path as an artist has to be ever-changing and evolving.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Daniel Newcomb and I’m an
American Photographer (b. 1973).
I started creating images at the age of 15 when my parents gave me my first 35mm camera and a darkroom. I was shy, but found solace in books, painting, music, and writing poetry. I felt a kinship in the works of Jack Kerouac, John Steinbeck, Miles Davis, Raymond Chandler, Charles Bukowski, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and all the jazz and rock poets i could consume. My camera became a way to express my emotions, and i was soon mixing my poetry and historical info with my art., found this extra engagement with the viewer which could nudge a person’s feelings towards how I felt at the time of creation.
From different formats of film to digital, my tools are ever-changing, but i always have a camera and a journal book in hand. This keeps my mind from just exploding. I have all these images and words in mind that I must continually have flowing out like a rambling jazz solo.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My family and friend’s for sure. They saw the spark a camera gave me an encouraged me. Buying me gear, modeling, paying for schooling etc.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yeah every day! Being an artist is a tough road. After supporting myself for 30 years with art you can almost give up on a daily basis. Money struggles, emotional, and inspiration are a real issue for an artist.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
A camera! Ha ha. I rarely leave the house with our on in hand. Times it’s an Anchor on my wrist and at times my salvation. That I live and breath art daily. Most my friends see that in every aspect of my life.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Procrastinating and start solving problems and shooting non stop. Really push to get that small slice of recognition with the art world.
