We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kenny Routt. Check out our conversation below.
Kenny, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. Are you walking a path—or wandering?
Sort of a mix of both. I wander when I need direction, and walk the best path when I find it. Being a creative is usually not linear. You will be forced to wander at times in this field, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s the nature of this industry.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am an Illustrator, and Art Director who blends traditional and digital media. I work in the advertising space as a freelance Art Director and Designer under my own company, Routt Agency. In 2025 I worked with a handful of great studios and agencies like Sawhorse productions, Obsidianworks, and Method Engine.
I also work in the entertainment space and have had a long working relationship with music artists like Erick the Architect, DJ Research, and Forenzik Styles. My most recent work was collaborating with Forenzik Styles to create the cover design and visual identity of the rollout for his newest album, “Paris in Winter.”
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My dedication to my craft is my power. I can remember graduating art school and telling myself that I needed to be relentless if I wanted to succeed. Experimenting, taking no days off in my early career, and getting my work down to a science has helped me tremendously throughout my artist/career journey. I don’t feel “powerful” but when I look back at all that I have accomplished by staying diligent, I can perceive it like an ambient constant power.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
To dig deep. Suffering taught me that actions speak louder than words. What are you going to DO about your situation? Talk is cheap. Do the work. Keep your head down. Be curious, humble, gracious, and open minded. You have the power to change your life.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Something I feel strongly about is sharing the “wealth” – Giving back to your colleagues, mentees, etc.
I frequently say “there is enough work out there for all of us [creatives].”
It is important to me to share knowledge and support fellow artists and those curious about making the pivot. I am not interested in gatekeeping or participating in sycophantic corporate politicking.
I need all my dogs to eat.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
Life is short and precious. You are not your job. Commercial art, advertising, etc provides me with a sustainable lifestyle, but at the end of the day all I want to do is draw, paint, collaborate creatively with friends, and to express my voice as an artist. Make time for yourself. Live life and let that experience influence your work.
