We recently had the chance to connect with Karl Redwood and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Karl, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: When was the last time you felt true joy?
The last time I felt true joy was for my birthday in March. I was surrounded by all my close friends, my wife, and people who truly value music. The energy of the room was unforgettable and I was honored to be celebrated surrounded by music.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is DJ Redwood. I am based in Fort Laurderale, FL. I am a versatile DJ, but I am known for bringing Caribbean vibes to events. I enjoy researching music from different cultures; classics and new. This makes me very knowledgable on the types of music selections for certain occasions. This is also how I am one of the selective many that is able to bring cultured music to events. I do my best to brand myself with bringing good vibes everywhere I go. It doesn’t matter the genre I am playing, it could be country music, but I will still bring the same energy. Hence my brand Vibes Dept. Currently, I am working on building my brand with upcoming apparel.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
When I first started, I wanted to do everything and be everywhere. I didn’t realize the value of my time. Over the years, I have matured to realize I am not obligated to do any and all events. I’ve learned not everyone is worth networking with and associating my name with. I’ve learned to value my time and my priorities changed. I’ve released that immaturity and gained the discernment to make better choices for myself, my family and my brand.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
With all things, comes struggles in life. The road has not always been smooth and there has definitely been ups and downs. There was a span of time where I was not being booked at all. I stopped practicing because I had no reason to. I lost the motivation because I wasn’t practicing. It was a downward spiral. My close friends and DJ friends were consistently asking me for upcoming events, but when I had none, they asked for short mixes or something just to hear me play. That’s when I pushed more mixes on my Soundcloud. From there, more people were able to hear my work and slowly I was contacted for more events.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
No bad mind! I look for positive outlooks everywhere I go. No matter how negative a situation may be, I stay humble, respectful, and look for the positive. I look for the good in people and I share my optimism.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I am most at peace when I first start my set. I could be happy, sad, mad, nervous, but as soon as I touch the turntables, feel the energy of the crowd, and play the first song, everything is gone and I am at peace.
