Today we’d like to introduce you to Titus Jones.
Hi Titus, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started landscaping at 4 years old. Playskool lawn mower, tiny shovel, plastic scissors and a red bucket which I used for collecting dirt and beetles. After a 24yr hiatus, I found myself returning to the green scene. However, this time, the toy mower was replaced with a SCAG 48 walk behind. Plastic scissors morphed into hedge trimmers; my red bucket shrank into a wallet and now I had a little one of my own. No longer on the hunt for insects, dead presidents were the prey. Since then, I’ve dabbled in construction and concrete, learned a little bit of tech (future excuse for getting fat) and expanded my repertoire to include floral design. It’s been a wild ride, still feel the wind in my face but, I believe that in the end, my children and their children will have something rare. The privilege to foster wealth as a family is what my offspring will have, basically legacy.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest obstacle that I’ve encountered, is the balance between providing for family while starting your own business. Every entrepreneur has his/her own lane that life has presented them with. I had to learn to start small and gradually grow. Investing too much energy into a job, left me with no time for my business and fighting depression. However, quitting a reliable income and jumping off the porch with only hopes, dreams and lint in my pocket never did me any favors.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The primary service that I provide is Gardening / Garden Maintenance. The realm of gardening includes but is not limited to: sod removal, soil amendment, tilling, grading, tree installation, weeding. mulching, and flower planting. Garden maintenance includes but is not limited to pruning, hedge trimming, weeding, and chemical weed treatment. The thing that sets me apart from others in my field is that I am also adept at floral design. After multiple seasons of being broke during the wintertime, I dedicated three years of my life to learning floristry. From wedding arrangements to funeral baskets to corsages; I pushed until I proficient enough to recipe my own arrangements to offer to my clients. I’m most proud of my resilience and my versatility. It has been a lot of ups and downs, but I am still here and won’t be going anywhere. If the readers take away nothing else, I will like them to know that I’m not a quitter.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
There seems to be a battle brewing on the horizon. Gas powered tools are slowly being replaced by battery powered tools.
As consumers become increasingly more concerned about the environment, the use of gas will become outdated.
