Inspiring Conversations with Shaun Leary of Slay Fitness with Shay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaun Leary.

Hi Shaun, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I actually started at the very beginning of quarantine in March 2020. I remember my bosses calling me and telling me we couldn’t teach in person anymore. My immediate response was “That is cool! I will start teaching online!” So I started teaching different style workout classes Mon-Fri. The classes range from Leg day to cardio kickboxing to dance cardio. As the year progressed, I realized that I had a small business going for myself. So in May 2021, I got my LLC and created Slay Fitness with Shay.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. When I originally started, I was living in NYC; however, now I live here and the fitness industry is harder to get into here. Not to mention it has been a slow process to teach and build here.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Slay Fitness was created to bring different styled workout classes from weight lifting to dance cardio. SFwS offers live online classes, an On-Demand folder for those that can’t make the lives, and is preparing for in-person classes soon. I’ve tailored my business to be a reflection of my personality, fun and silly yet intense. I want people to see a proud queer business owner that doesn’t want to fit into the overly “masculine” energy of most gyms/fitness brands. Fitness is for everyone and you should come as you are. Only through being our most authentic selves can we find our individual fitness journeys.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I would love for people to just take a class. I’ve had friends help me record for the On Demand. Through the experience of “taking the class”, they enjoyed the workout and vibe! If you can’t take or find it is not for you, share it with a friend you think would like the class.
