Inspiring Conversations with Roger Zwickel of R Design Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roger Zwickel.

Hi Roger, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I studied in a 5-year interior design program in the faculty of architecture in Canada before moving to New York in the early ’80s where I worked with Vicente Wolf for several years before branching off on my own. Subsequently, I moved to Florida and worked for several design firms until I opened up my own company R Design Studio Inc. 20 years ago.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s never a smooth road and each day has its challenges, and one must look at this as a learning experience. Since the pandemic hit, we are all facing new challenges and struggles but collectively, I think we will make it through.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about R Design Studio Inc.?
We have always worked in high-end residential and commercial design. Our projects include executive offices, board rooms, condo lobbies, and of course, residential spaces in houses and condominiums. We have very good relationships with our clients, in some cases lasting more than 3 decades and generations.

Also, what is very important is to establish strong bonds with one’s trades and suppliers because by doing so they will go that extra mile.

We have a strong background in creating sophisticated, individual spaces with emphasis in livable, attractive, and refined interiors.

Fortunately, over the years, I have done projects in Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, and all over the United States as well as Canada. The experience of how things are done in different parts of the world is invaluable. This has helped me learned about all different cultures, which allows me to adapt to everybody’s needs.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My parents had lived in Morocco for many years before moving to Canada. We had a lot of exotic furniture that they brough back with them, which I thought it was totally normal until I started going to friends’ homes to discover that they lived very differently than we did… from decor to cuisine. From an early age, I started traveling with my family which to me was the most lasting memories which helped form who I have become.

Despite my father being in the restaurant industry, he was very interested in architecture and design, and we use to come up with all kinds of hypothetical designs for homes we would love to build in different parts of the world.
