Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorin Gordon
Hi Lorin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in South Florida. After attending college in Tampa, I made a bold decision to book a one-way flight to New York to fulfill my dream of living in NYC. Anyone who knows me can attest, that I am very outgoing and energetic. When I was younger, I volunteered in a nursing home and always wanted to start a non-profit for kids, giving to other kids. I always try to stay in a positive mind frame, which has led me to be a risk taker. Thankfully, taking a leap of faith pays off, as I always land on my feet. When I arrived in NYC, I was unemployed. I sought the assistance of a recruitment agency who placed me at a law firm as a legal assistant. I felt that it was the right opportunity for me to get on the right track with a corporate position and stable wages. However, NYC is not cheap. I stayed with the law firm for a few years until I was presented with a promotional marketing job. I worked there enjoying the perks of the job such as: promo parties of big brands names, swag bags, fashion week and all the night life NYC has to offer. Then I met my ex-husband where the late night parties and long hours stopped. We were married and pregnant all in the same year. I stopped working to raise my daughter, Madison for the first seven years. Thereafter, I was divorced and found myself back where I started when I first moved to NYC. Except now, I was a single parent. I reached out to recruiters in hopes that despite the gap years on my resume, I would be able to get back into the workforce. Thankfully, a recruiting firm saw my potential and reached out. The recruitment firm felt I was a good match for an office manager role at a CPA firm. However, instead of scheduling the office manager interview, the recruitment firm offered me a position with their recruiting firm instead. I was lucky to join a great company, where I remained employed for 10 years. Thereafter, I branched out on my own and have been fortunate enough to build up my own recruiting firm, commencing two years ago.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Without a doubt, I’ve faced challenges. While it’d be great to say everything went smoothly and I easily transitioned to running my own business, that just wouldn’t be true. I firmly believe facing challenges helps you learn and grow. When I made the decision to be my own boss, I had come up with a strategy for moving forward. But as we all know, things don’t always go according to plan. Coinciding with this major career shift, came with personal experiences. One crucial personal experience was finalizing my divorce and traversing into single parenthood. Looking back, I can honestly say it was a scary time for me but all of this adversity only made me stronger. It would have been way too easy to curl up in a ball and hide, but instead, I embraced the challenges that were thrown at me. I made sure to pave a positive path forward to not only show myself what I’m capable of but to also show my daughter. I realize this may sound a bit cliché, but having a sense of empowerment was foundational to my current success. Keeping my daughter close to me while starting my business, I opted to name my company after her, “Madison” Associates NY Inc.
We’ve been impressed with Madison Associates NY Inc. , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My recruitment firm doesn’t play favorites. I support all industries across all levels. Although, I do like to refer to myself as a ‘corporate matchmaker’, offering a ‘white glove’ service to both clients and candidates. While generating revenue is a must, relationships come first. If you establish a solid, long-standing relationship in business, remaining genuine in everything you do, generating revenue will come easily. My focus has always been to help others excel develop and grow. Finding the best role for a candidate and the best employee for a client means just as much to me as it does to them. I care. I care so much about the success of others. This isn’t hard to fathom as their success truly is mine. I’m passionate about what I do and I like to think that it shines through in my performance.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Starting a new business, as we all know, is a huge risk. There’s lots of literature out there to help others when starting out. I don’t have all the answers but personally speaking, I believe if you don’t take a risk on yourself, how will you never know what you’re capable of? So back yourself. Follow and always trust your instincts. Be your number one fan! With positivity, the know how and confidence, you cannot fail. For me, I put myself in my candidates’ and clients’ shoes. I ask myself, “Where can I see myself staying and growing for long term”, “What candidate would be the best fit for our company team” to myself. Asking these types of questions ensures I’m thinking both outside and inside the box, giving my clients and candidates 100% of myself.
