Inspiring Conversations with Katherine Angel of Kat’s Delights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Angel

Hi Katherine, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As most journeys, it was very much an unexpected path. It started back in 2020 with a Carrot Cake, my dads favorite. Of course being in quarantine for so long, I had a lot of time on my hands to where I was constantly making this for my dad to the point where I perfected my recipe. I then decided to make a cake for my best friends birthday in 2021 and that’s where she and her husband sparked the idea in my head on selling it and making it a side business. At first, the idea was to do the semi naked style cakes. I had no experience in decorating or baking. I always loved cooking and thought of myself to cook more rather than bake. I created a name and an instagram but was still indifferent about what I wanted this to become. I tried it out for a year and during that year I began to experiment outside of the “semi-naked” style as people started requesting birthday cakes or kiddo cakes as I like to call them. I even branched out to wedding cakes. However, I was still unsure where I wanted to take this. It was never about the extra income and baking is definitely not something you can do lightly and expect the same result. Your energy is felt in your baking and if I’m feeling off, my cakes were going to be feeling it as well. In November of 2021, after my last wedding, I decided to take some time off completely and re-evaluate what it was that I really wanted. Come, 2022, I started to really think about it and I really did miss it. I enjoyed it and thought to myself, “this is what I want long term”. So, I decided to start up again but also decided to rebrand and really organize myself. I changed the company name, logo, colors, niche, everything! Alongside my friends and family’s support, I found a mentor who really helped and to this day has continued to be a big support. I really began to trust myself and truly believe in my capability to make this something great. Fast forward to 2024, here we are, continuing to grow and learn from all types challenges, good ones and the not so good ones. I’m a one woman show (for now) so there’s a lot happening and I’m never not working in some capacity. We’ve grown tremendously as a business and I’m really excited for whats to come in the future. I’ve met and built such a wonderful community with other entrepreneurs who have gone or are going through a similar experience. I’m currently working a full time job in parallel with Kat’s Delight’s so we are definitely always busy in every way! It’s not easy and definitely tiring but it’s all 1000% worth it and so rewarding. Creating relationships and bringing visions to life is what I really love to do and I can’t wait to continue bring my dream to life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road! I’ve had my fare share of struggles and challenges. All of which have taught me valuable lessons. One of my biggest challenge that I faced when I started was not charging what I should have and thinking I was charging too much and in fear of losing that client or not having them book with me because they thought it was too expensive and I was just a “home baker”. That was one of my biggest realizations when I rebranded to Kat’s Delights. I learned my worth and the value of my work and began to charge correctly without feeling bad. That helped me move forward so much because I felt confident in the service I was providing and the brand I was representing.

As you know, we’re big fans of Kat’s Delights. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Kat’s Delights is a Miami based bakery offering custom cakes and selected desserts for any event! KD is a latina, woman owned business and we specialize in Vintage style cakes, also known as Lambeth style cakes but are not limited to just that. All our cakes are custom to your vision and needs. We add our own special touch to each and every cake and are made with all the love and passion. We also offer a variety of treats such as cake pops, cupcakes and chocolate covered oreos which add a great touch to any event and sweet lovers! Kat’s Delights is different because we focus on building that partnership/relationship with each and every client with the hopes of creating that “forever baker bond”. We love to cater to our clients and ensure we deliver exactly what they are looking for. I am the most proud of how far we’ve come after we rebranded. Seeing people reaching out because they were recommended by someone that had ordered from us is truly the best feeling and what keeps us going. The after message letting us know that the cake was delicious and beautiful…there’s nothing better than that!!

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
The best advice I was given that I still carry on to this day is… just start and don’t care what others think! I live by this every day. It’s hard to start a social media presence from 0. It’s hard to see engagement go down or feel like it’s a roller coaster. But on the days you feel like that, there’s someone else somewhere thinking and wishing they could be doing what you’re doing. I am so eternally grateful for this opportunity and to have this turned into what it is now. I’m so inspired by others and by myself to keep going. There is truly nothing like loving what you do and thinking to yourself “wow, I did that”. So just start, and don’t look back! I promise, you won’t regret it.
