Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Black.
Hi Jill, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve not had a linear career path in my lifetime. Before I was doing aesthetics, I was working in fashion editorial and doing costume and wardrobe in film. I studied fashion design at Parson’s School of Design, which is where I have a degree from. I’m so glad I did all that! Fashion and costume were big passions of mine, and I needed to open, walk through and then close that door before moving onto my other passion, which is holistic health. I had the fortuitous opportunity of working for and apprenticing for a holistic doctor in NYC for five years. It was within that opportunity that we both learned about microcurrent technology for the face. We sourced the technology, and it took a while to pull it together, but then we just went for it.
Most of our patients were women, so we already had a built-in clientele. The facials took off! I continued that part of the business on my own when we, the doc and I, parted ways. It’s been ten years and I’m still doing microcurrent facials and consulting on natural ways of healing to help guide my clients on how to feel better. I’ve been focusing a lot on skin conditions lately but also work with a wide range of symptoms and ailments. Studying fashion design and working in film had not only trained my eye but it trained me to always remain creative and to look at and think about things holistically, from every angle, which has helped me develop my techniques and methods for my facials and holistic health work. I also incorporate energy healing into my work. I had incredible results myself with Vortex Healing and decided to take that on and incorporate it into my work. The effects are life-evolving.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No! There are many times I wanted to give up! Before moving to Miami (literally days before the pandemic hit) I was in NYC. NYC is a struggle within itself just to live there. To have a business there, with not a lot of money, is very hard. For years I had to keep a corporate job while I was building up my holistic business. For my weekday clients, I would leave my corporate job early and head across town to see clients. I was running on empty for years.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I’m mostly known for my microcurrent facials. The method I use is unique to me and very effective. Aesthetics-wise, there are a couple of things that sets me apart: I focus only on microcurrent facials. That is my sole beauty modality. During a facial, I mostly use microcurrent the entire time. There are very few estheticians that focus only on microcurrent, and by doing so, have a deep breadth of knowledge of the modality. I’ve had a decade of working with it and honing my technique. I’ve seen the power of it to contour the face and restore its youthful curves, texture and tone. When done cumulatively, I’ve seen it get people off of Botox and fillers, although it works amazingly together with both of those! With a decade of experience under my belt, I’ve seen firsthand how, if you are consistent with microcurrent, you can very much turn back the clock, aesthetically speaking. I’ve seen it in my clients that have been with me from the beginning. Another thing that makes me unique as an esthetician is that I’m also a holistic practitioner. I have years of apprenticeship and work experience with a myriad of conditions, including skin, where I’m able to confidently help guide my clients to better their skin conditions from the inside out. I consult with my clients holistically to try to figure out what can be causing their symptoms and help educate them on how to correct it with natural remedies and diet.
My mission in life has always been to serve others. I have the helper archetype. I’m ecstatic that I get to operate a business where I’m able to fulfill that mission by incorporating all of my passions under one roof. My services are effective and they deliver and most importantly, they come from the heart.
What are your plans for the future?
I don’t really know that far ahead actually. I recently moved my business from NYC to Miami and have been rebranding myself down here, so I’m really just taking the time to remain present with that and paying attention to what my Miami clients want. I’m also currently in school for Oriental Medicine. In a few years, you’ll be able to call me Dr. Black. Haha! Once I’m licensed, my holistic health and healing offerings will shift to a much deeper place as I’ll be able to offer more modalities in that space.
