Today we’d like to introduce you to Jean Blackwell Font.
Jean, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started Font Squared in 2017 because I kept seeing the same problem in the arts and nonprofit world: incredible missions and talent, but marketing that felt scattered, stressful, and hard to measure. I’m an artist at heart, and I’ve always been drawn to the organizations that hold communities together—museums, cultural nonprofits, galleries, community-based programs—so it felt natural to build a business that supports them in a way that’s both creative and practical.
In the early years, Font Squared grew through relationships and word of mouth. I leaned into what I was consistently being asked to do: bring order to the chaos—turning “we need more people to show up, donate, and stay connected” into clear systems for email, websites, content, and events. Over time, I saw that the biggest wins didn’t come from chasing trends; they came from strengthening owned channels (especially email and the website), building audience trust, and reporting results in a way that leadership and funders could actually use.
Today, Font Squared is a mission-aligned growth partner for cultural nonprofits and arts organizations. We’re a small, high-touch team that blends strategy, execution, and impact reporting—so our clients aren’t just “posting more,” they’re building sustainable revenue and measurable audience growth. The work has evolved, but the core has stayed the same: artists amplifying artists, and helping organizations tell their stories with integrity, clarity, and results.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like most small businesses, Font Squared grew through a mix of momentum and uncertainty—figuring things out in real time, managing inconsistent cash flow early on, and learning how to price and scope work in a way that was sustainable (especially in the nonprofit and arts space, where budgets are real and the needs are big). There’s also the constant challenge of balancing high-touch service with capacity—protecting quality while building systems that don’t rely on me being available 24/7.
A major turning point was my 2020 injury, which took me out of the workplace and forced a complete reset. It was scary and disruptive, but it also became the catalyst for stepping fully into the business. I had to rethink how I worked, how I led, and how I built a company that could support my health and still deliver at a high level. That period clarified what mattered: focusing on the work that creates measurable impact, building repeatable systems, and creating a team structure that’s flexible and resilient.
In a way, the challenges shaped the business into what it is now. Font Squared exists because I believe creative organizations deserve marketing that’s grounded, organized, and aligned with their mission—and I’ve learned firsthand that sustainability isn’t just a business goal, it’s a personal one too.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Font Squared?
Font Squared is a marketing and creative services agency built specifically to support cultural nonprofits and arts organizations. We help mission-driven teams grow audiences, increase revenue, and communicate impact without losing the heart of what they do. Practically, that means we build and run the marketing systems that make growth possible—email marketing, website and blog content, event marketing, audience development strategy, and reporting that leadership and funders can actually use.
We’re known for turning complexity into clarity. A lot of organizations are juggling a million priorities with small teams, and marketing becomes reactive. We specialize in creating structure: clear messaging, repeatable workflows, and measurable KPIs—so marketing stops feeling like a guessing game and starts feeling like a reliable engine. We also prioritize owned channels (especially email and the website) because they’re sustainable, they build trust over time, and they don’t depend on constantly changing social algorithms.
What sets us apart is that we’re artist-led and sector-fluent, with a high-touch approach. We understand how arts organizations really operate—how funding works, how community relationships matter, and how success isn’t always measured in ticket sales. We’re also deeply committed to integrity in storytelling: marketing that respects the mission, reflects the values, and still drives results. Brand-wise, I’m most proud that Font Squared has built a reputation for being both warm and rigorous—creative, but organized; compassionate, but direct; and always grounded in what will actually move the needle. What I want readers to know is simple: if you’re doing meaningful cultural work and you’re ready for marketing that’s sustainable, measurable, and aligned with your mission, that’s exactly what we’re here to build with you.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I love about Miami is the diversity—there’s a real mix of cultures, people, languages, and flavors that you feel every day, and it makes the city creatively alive. I also genuinely love how beautiful it is here: the green spaces, the sunsets, the water, and even the architectural beauty. There’s an attention to design and a willingness to include the arts in public life that I don’t take for granted.
What’s hard is how expensive everything has become, and how that cost pushes artists out of the very spaces that make the city vibrant. It can feel increasingly difficult to do good, mission-driven work here when the financial pressure is so intense—especially for artists and nonprofits who are already stretching limited resources to serve the community.
At the same time, one of the most hopeful things about Miami is how much collaboration is happening between the arts and nonprofit worlds. Even with the challenges of being in a big city, there are so many people invested in making Miami a place where culture, community, and opportunity can thrive—and that collective effort is something I’m proud to be part of.
