Hi Dianna, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Have you ever felt like you are doing all the right things but not getting the results you desire? If this sounds like you, I assure you – you are not a failure; you simply need a better and more effective system! As a 360 Integrated Executive Coach and Professional Speaker, I support clients in designing a life they are excited about living. While this process sounds simplified, developing the skills to assist clients in taking a systematic approach to success has been a long and transformative journey of my own.

At 18, I became a single mother and unknowingly started the journey of designing a life that I was proud and excited about. As you might imagine, deciding to go through with becoming a single teenage mother garnered significant concern from many of the adults in my life. Motivated to prove naysayers wrong, my north star became ensuring I would shatter stereotypes associated with being a black, single, and young mother. After graduating from the University of Washington with a degree in accounting and a baby, almost literally, on my hip, I started a career in Aerospace for the primary reason being its stability and benefits.

You can say my career choice was a decision rooted in practicality! Turns out this career choice would equip me with a diverse set of battle-tested critical business skills. I remained in Aerospace significantly longer than my originally planned 5 years to be vested in the pension program and earned leadership roles in a diverse set of businesses, and after almost 25 years, I resigned to join a venture-backed startup as Chief Operating Officer (COO). It is also prudent to mention that for some time, I nurtured my skills and passion for health and wellness as on some Saturdays, I worked in an integrated health clinic under the supervision of a medical doctor as the nutritional counselor.

In my executive coaching practice, I leverage my background in aerospace, startups, and wellness to support clients in unleashing their potential across both their personal and professional lives. With over a decade of coaching experience and the privilege of working with hundreds globally, I attract clients seeking to elevate themselves comprehensively. As their “partner in shine,” I’m dedicated to guiding them through breakthroughs in areas they have blind spots or feel as though they aren’t operating at their full potential. #winning

In my personal life, I take pride in being the mother to a now-adult son, and two of my favorite people on the planet call me ‘Coco’—my version of grandma. Some of my favorite pastimes are being fully immersed in ‘Big Talk’ – I never meet a stranger, exploring international destinations (Brazil – where I am currently writing this, Thailand, Bali & Dubai), leading indoor cycle classes, and pushing my limits in the gym. My 2024 goals include becoming conversational in Portuguese, more time dancing, improving my tennis skills, and starting golf.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Navigating the path to establishing my coaching firm has been a journey filled with unexpected challenges and unique hurdles. As a teen single mother, I balanced the responsibilities of parenthood with the demands of pursuing a challenging college major in Accounting and breaking barriers in the Aerospace field—a space where I often stood out as the only woman at my responsibility level and frequently the sole woman of color.

Being an “only” brought its challenges and was far from easy; however, I used those hurdles to challenge the status quo and redefine conventional norms within my professional environment. Upon reflection, I realized that these inequitable experiences significantly shaped my leadership values and style. I live by leading by example, bringing back the “human” in humanity, and engaging with curiosity and empathy.

This approach extends into my coaching practice, where I emphasize not only professional growth but also personal development, acknowledging their interconnectedness. This holistic philosophy is rooted in my belief that unlocking our full potential is tied to living an integrated and not compartmentalized life. I believe and have seen that this approach fosters transformative change. My journey has not just shaped my leadership style but also profoundly influenced the way I guide and support others.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Amidst the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 crisis, I intensified my focus on personal development, leading me to the insightful and powerful book “The Big Leap” by Gay Hendricks. My significant takeaway was that the time is now for me to take my “big leap” and wholeheartedly commit to operating in my zone of genius.

The pandemic catalyzed this realization, propelling me to operate in coaching full-time through Moore Joy Group. No more juggling a W-2 while coaching clients; instead, I am fully immersed in what lights me up, being a trusted advisor to leaders. The crisis became a lens through which I reflected on the urgency of living a life aligned with my passions, prompting the realization that now is the time to design a fulfilling and exciting life.
