Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey in marketing began with a deep interest in understanding consumer behavior and decision-making. I pursued my Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing and IT from Carleton University, which provided a strong foundation in business principles and technology.

After a couple of years working in marketing with a large tech company, I went on to earn an MBA in Marketing and IT from Concordia University. These academic experiences equipped me with the necessary skills to navigate the complex interplay between marketing strategies and technological advancements.

I kicked off my career in technology and marketing consulting, where I had the privilege of working with several Fortune 500 companies. This phase of my career was instrumental in shaping my strategic thinking and execution skills. I was involved in diverse projects that spanned different industries, allowing me to develop a robust understanding of market dynamics and consumer behavior at scale.

After years of consulting, I felt a calling to apply my knowledge and skills in a more entrepreneurial setting. This led to the founding of ZenChange Marketing over a decade ago. ZenChange was born out of a desire to provide comprehensive marketing solutions to small and medium-sized enterprises that often lack the resources for a full in-house marketing team. At ZenChange, we specialize in digital and grassroots marketing, helping businesses create impactful strategies that drive growth and profitability.

As a Fractional CMO, I’ve had the opportunity to work with numerous startups and medium-sized businesses, guiding them through pivotal growth stages. One of the highlights of my career was leading two tech startups through successful exits valued at $28 million. These experiences taught me the importance of leveraging both digital marketing and practical, non-digital strategies to support growth.

My work spans various regulated industries, including healthcare, legal, cannabis, and wine & spirits. Each industry presents its unique challenges and opportunities, which keeps my work both exciting and rewarding. For instance, in the healthcare and cannabis sectors, compliance and education are paramount. In the wine and spirits industries, creating engaging and experiential marketing campaigns is key to success.

In the legal sector, education is also important, as is the personalization of individual attorneys as brands to be top-of-funnel for their firm. My ability to adapt and tailor strategies to meet the specific needs of each industry has been a significant factor in my success.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Oh, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like any entrepreneurial journey, mine has had its share of challenges. Early on, one of the biggest hurdles was transitioning from a corporate environment to running my own business. In a large corporation, you have resources and support systems; an entrepreneur often has to wear many hats and manage everything from strategy to execution.

Building and scaling ZenChange Marketing also came with its set of obstacles. Finding the right talent and building a cohesive team was crucial but not always easy. There were times when we faced financial constraints, especially during the early stages of growth. Balancing client acquisition with delivering high-quality services required meticulous planning and a lot of perseverance.

One particularly challenging period was during the early 2020s when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Like many businesses, we had to pivot quickly. The sudden shift to digital-first strategies was both a challenge and an opportunity. Fortunately, we were already a virtual company. We had to help our clients navigate this new reality while ensuring our operations could withstand the strong demand for our services while remaining financially accessible to our clients, who were often struggling. This period taught me a lot about resilience and the importance of agility in business.

Despite these challenges, each struggle was a learning opportunity. They pushed me to innovate, adapt, and grow both personally and professionally. Overcoming these hurdles has made the successes all the more rewarding. It’s the bumps in the road that often provide the most valuable lessons and shape you into a more effective leader and marketer.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck has certainly played a role in both my life and business, though it’s often intertwined with preparation and persistence.

I’ve had moments of good luck, such as meeting key mentors and clients at just the right time. These encounters have opened doors and provided opportunities that significantly advanced my career. I even met my husband through a chance meeting in another country when we both lived half a world apart!

Overall, I believe that while luck can influence certain moments, it’s consistent hard work, strategic planning, and adaptability that truly drive long-term success. Being ready to seize opportunities when they arise and learning from setbacks has been crucial in my journey.
