Inspiring Conversations with Claudia Halwani of Claudia M Halwani, DOM, Inc.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Claudia Halwani.

Hi Claudia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I always thought I would study law. My undergraduate degree was Political Science and English with this plan in mind. I sat for the LSAT and did well, but at that time I was also planning my wedding. It was 1992 and if you lived in Miami at that time, you know what happened next …. Hurricane Andrew hit. It was devastating and turned our lives upside down. Everything took on another perspective and I realized I wanted to spend time with my family and new husband and rebuild our lives, so law school was put on hold.

A few years later our life took another unexpected turn. After the birth of my second child, we realized something was off in his development. He was subsequently diagnosed with autism. At the time, information and resources were much more limited so we had to do a lot of research and seek out treatments on our own. This was when I was first introduced to holistic medicine. Everything we implemented from the holistic medicine side including changes in diet and remedies, along with the amazing speech and occupational therapies made an enormous difference. He started to talk and interact and his progress was astounding. I saw first-hand the results and continued to seek out other modalities that would continue to help his progress.

I was drawn to oriental medicine and the various treatments that fall within it including acupuncture, moxabustion, herbal formulations and cupping. This ancient and complex system of healing intrigued me. After touring an acupuncture school with my daughter, I knew I wanted to learn more. Within two weeks, I started the four year program earning a Bachelor of Health Science and a Master of Oriental Medicine degree in three years. After passing my State board exams, I knew I wanted to see as many patients as possible and I began working at a clinic where I was able to gain valuable experience and get the positive feedback from my patients that confirmed my personal experiences with these treatments.

Today, I have a solo practice that is very personalized and focused on each individual patient. I’ve continued to study and include other modalities of treatment in my practice. I offer treatments in acupuncture, herbal consultations, cupping, red light therapy, cosmetic acupuncture and micro needling. Treatments address emotional issues such as depression, anxiety, grief, PTSD and also physiological acute and chronic conditions such as pain in the body, digestive issues, infertility, gynecological issues, skin conditions, headaches, weight loss and most important preventative care. Treatments are always holistic to address as many issues as possible and bring the body, mind and spirit to a balanced state. I am very lucky to have found my passion in my work and enjoy and appreciate my patients.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to where I am today was not always smooth. At the time I decided to go back to school to study acupuncture and essentially change my profession, I was still raising my three children, one who has autism, working a full time job and taking care of my home. I learned that the things we see as obstacles in our lives are sometimes what drive us. For me, my son’s autism has always been a primary reason to learn more, explore new treatments and seek alternative modalities. This has served us all very well and always helped me to continue to push forward.

We’ve been impressed with Claudia M Halwani, DOM, Inc., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a sole practitioner and I manage all aspects of my business. I have had the experience of working in clinic and seeing many patients per day. I wanted my private practice to be more personal and not feel the limitations in the use of different treatment modalities or time. My office offers a comfortable, private space where I can give each patient the time necessary to address their individual situation.
My services include acupuncture, e-stim, cupping, herbal and homeopathic remedies and moxabustion. Over, the years I’ve integrated various tools to enhance treatments and improve services including red light therapy, cold laser therapy, and micro needling. These tools can support the treatments for pain, anxiety, post-op recuperation, and cosmetic issues.
In recent years, I have also focused on patients with fertility issues. I believe acupuncture treatments and herbal supplements can be excellent tools in balancing the body at a time when stress can impacts so many young couples. I often work with patients undergoing treatments for IVF and IUI to support these treatments along with their medical doctors.
I’m very proud of the fact that my practice has grown organically over the years, mostly through referrals and word of mouth. I give 100% + to each of my patients and my brand is me so it’s most important that my patients have a positive experience.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice to those starting out is keep learning and get For anyone starting out in my profession, I would say get as much experience as you can as soon as possible. The more you treat, the sooner you find your own personal technique and how you want to implement the things you know. This is a complex and broad field with much learn. Keep seeking out new information, modalities and protocols. It is amazing how many brilliant practitioners there are….learn from them.
