Hi Anthony, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Anthony Arnone. If you told me 10 years ago I would be running Boca Raton’s largest crystal shop, I would have probably laughed. You truly never know how the cards you were dealt will play out. I originally started this journey through an ad I posted on Craigs List. Yes, a fruitful and successful crystal business was made possible through CRAIGS LIST.
A woman named Ruby contacted me for mobile marketing services and asked for my help selling her inventory. Her shop had closed down and she was looking to sell off the rest of her stones and crystals. When I arrived at her home for the first time, I was in shock at the beauty and quantity of these pieces. Using the experience I gained as the head of the marketing department at my previous position, we hit the ground running and I began to book appointments and bring people to Ruby’s home to purchase crystals. After seeing the steady flow of sales, Ruby and I decided to create a new crystal business together. Ruby’s Healing Crystals was born.
Fast forward 6 years; we have the largest brick and mortar crystal store in Boca Raton! Ruby’s Healing Crystals has been serving the community and providing a safe, friendly, and relaxed shopping experience for all.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been as rewarding as it has been difficult. Although I was Ruby’s right hand man, she had decades of experience owning and operating different businesses. There was a huge learning curve when I took over as owner. After 4 years, I finally feel as though I have a handle on my business and a finger on the pulse. It takes time. There will be unnecessary dollars spent and time wasted trying to figure out what will work and benefit your business.
A specific struggle I remember was upsizing our shop and moving right after taking over the business. Our business was booming during covid and sales were high. When I took over, our rent increased by over 2x and I had an inflated idea in my head about how sales were going to continue. We were due for a larger space, but I was not experienced with overhead costs and budgeting.
Between government stimulus ending and the online market becoming saturated with crystal dealers, we saw a significant decrease in online sales. I found myself with less time to focus on online growth and the changes that were taking place in that space. It took years to figure out a balance and find the right team to support me and keep the shop running while I focused on growth and consistency in the online space. We now are consistently growing online and have a wonderful community of customers/friends that support us every week.
