Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Alston.
Hi Victoria, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up eating the standard American diet and was not very knowledgeable about health & wellness. In my teens, I started to lose a lot of family members due to lifestyle diseases. Family members who should still be here, but didn’t really make it to older age. When I was 19, my mother suffered a stroke, and after months of being in a coma and having to go through rehab and testing, doctors could not find a genetic or blood disorder that led to the stroke, which let us know if it was diet and lifestyle related as well.
This sparked my interest in learning more about health and nutrition. I continued on through college studying finance and going on to work in Finance for almost a decade. During this time, my passion for nutrition continued to grow, and I started being the resident health coach in my finance office. I eventually realized I had a much bigger purpose than helping corporations become more profitable.
This led me on a journey of faith and self-discovery. I eventually decided to quit my finance career and move to London, England, to study nutrition and plant-based culinary arts. During my search for my true purpose, I realized that I could help people be healthier much faster with healthy food that tastes really good than simply trying to explain nutrition to them. Which is why I decided to become a chef.
While in culinary school, I launched Our Healthy Kitchen. With the intention behind the name being that health & nutrition is for everyone. Not just certain demographics. We began leading cooking and nutrition classes, where we cook a really delicious meal that happens to be healthy, and then a nutritionist or registered dietitian presents on different health and nutrition topics while participants enjoy their meals. Our classes also allow participants to ask the chef or dietician anything. It proved to be a fun way to learn to cook healthier and gain valuable nutrition knowledge. Fast forward to today and I have personally taught over 23,000 people healthy cooking and nutrition.
After a few years running Our Healthy Kitchen online education platform. I figured I should start posting on social media. Through my platforms, I’ve now been able to reach millions of people with yummy healthy recipes, while still personally teaching most of my company’s classes. In every video I post online, I try to include little nuggets of nutrition and wellness tips. I’m grateful for my community and that I get to share my love for cooking and nutrition every single day. I’m also grateful to employ a team of amazing people on the same mission as me, to help as many people as possible eat and live healthier, longer lives.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all; I completely blew up my life at 30 years old. Moving countries, leaving my career behind, and completely starting over is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. There has been lots of fear & doubt in addition to the normal struggles of being an Entrepreneur, which can feel isolating at times. This journey has required a lot of sacrifice and discipline.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Our Healthy Kitchen?
