Hi Vanessa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
According to family, I was destined to become a lawyer. I started clerking with the late Judge Manuel Crespo in the Eleventh Circuit Court- Criminal division when I was 16 years old. I would spend my spring break, winter break, and summer vacations soaking up all the legalese. After High School graduation, I attend the Florida State University where I would eventually graduate with a Bachelor’s of Arts in English Literature and Political Science. Personal reasons brought me back to Miami, Florida where I later attended St. Thomas University School of Law. After graduation, I began practicing in a private law firm and also worked evenings as an aviation lawyer. I have been practicing law for over 11 years now, own my private practice (Law Office of Vanessa D. Torres, P.A.), and am general counsel for Bischoff Aerospace, Inc. I am also serving as the Chair of the Florida Bar’s Aviation Law Committee.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has neither been smooth nor bumpy. As a minority female in the legal industry, I have endured quite a bit of chauvinism, sex discrimination (on the basis of being a mother and having a family), and wage disparity. I have worked at a law firm where a male associate who is less qualified than I made significantly more money than I made. I constantly deal with opposing counsels (male) who pride themselves in their ability to be condescending. I have also lost relationships that disagreed with my motto of “I work to live, not live to work.” However, I have also been blessed with incredible opportunities to help clients– those moments mask the ugly parts of my profession. If there is one word to describe me, it is without a doubt, perseverance.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Compassion. Clients are not just income-generating entities to me. When I accept a client, I treat them and their issues with care and respect. There are far too many attorneys in South Florida who want to destroy families in the interest of making more money. I don’t do that. I try to salvage and mend issues before they cause further damage.
