Today we’d like to introduce you to TéQuan Johnson.
TéQuan , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Step aerobics is something I grew up doing with my mother. As a kid, I loved it—there was joy in it, there was fun, and there was this beautiful connection between us. I’m a dancer at heart, so choreography and movement have always come naturally to me. But I noticed something: there were run clubs everywhere, Pilates was having its moment, yoga had its time. Step aerobics, though? It was untouched. Especially here in Miami. No one else is doing it.
I wanted to bring it back—but not as a throwback. I wanted to make it modern, current, and fun. Step aerobics deserves a seat at the table alongside every other modality. There’s a whole generation of people who never got to try it, and I wanted to give them that opportunity.
Why step specifically? Because it’s not boring. Running doesn’t do it for me. The gym doesn’t do it for me. But step aerobics has dance built into it. And dance is powerful—it engages your body and your mind. You’re not just moving; your brain is moving too. That’s stress relief. That’s joy. You can’t help but feel good after.
STEPOLOGY is built on an eight-count method, and it’s rooted in one core idea: this is a space for everybody. Every body type, every experience level. You show up how you want. No dress code, no judgment. It’s about feeling free and exploring your mind and body through something that’s actually fun.
I launched in September 2025, and the response has been incredible. We’ve sold out almost every event. We started at The Miami Beach Edition, moved to monthly classes at Co-Fitness in Edgewater, and now we have a home and weekly schedule at SheMoves in Little River. We’ve got a retreat coming April 12–17, 2027 on the Virgin Voyage cruise line, and I’m building an instructor network right now—training people who want to teach STEPOLOGY as a method.
My vision is simple: STEPOLOGY is going to be recognized and heard as a modality that deserves its place. It’s going to be something bigger than I can even imagine, and it’s going to bring a lot of happiness into people’s lives.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t been smooth. But the struggles have been the right ones.
The biggest challenge has been convincing people to try a new modality—especially when they come in thinking they’re not coordinated, or they don’t have rhythm. There’s this assumption that step aerobics requires a certain skill level or a certain body type. But we’ve cracked the code on that. The way we teach at STEPOLOGY, everybody picks it up. By the end of class, you feel like a natural. You understand the modality. And that’s been the breakthrough—once people experience it, they get it.
The second challenge is mindset. When you’re starting any new venture, there’s doubt. You question whether you can actually pull it off, whether you can take it all the way. That’s real. But I’ve been surrounded by amazing people who showed up for me in every way—not just showing up to classes, but reminding me that if no one else believes in it, *I* have to believe in it. And as long as I believe in it, I can make this thing work. That support has been everything.
And then there’s the practical side: finding the right space. That’s been a journey. But we’ve landed in really amazing studios and built partnerships with venues that actually get the vision. They’re supportive, they’re open, and they’re willing to grow with us without asking us to water down the brand or the message. That matters.
The obstacles forced us to get clear on who we are and what we stand for.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about STEPOLOGY?
STEPOLOGY is a step aerobics methodology and community built right here in Miami. Right now, people are investing in classes at She Moves in Little River, at Co Fitness in Edgewater, and at our Miami Beach location on South Beach. We’re also seeing early retreat bookings for our Caribbean cruise in April 2027. But what we’re really building is awareness and community—revenue follows that.
Here’s what I’m most proud of: the methodology itself. I’ve spent serious time developing the eight-count method, the modifications, the progressions, the technique standards. We’re setting the bar for step aerobics in Miami. But honestly? The thing that moves me most is the community that’s attached itself to this. People who are open to trying something new, who show up for each other, who believe in what we’re building. The level of support is out of this world.
**What sets us apart** is our community vibe—and it’s unmatched. Everybody is welcome. We don’t care if you can’t afford every class. We don’t care about matching sets or expensive gear or name brands. That’s not what STEPOLOGY is about. We care about one thing: making sure that when you step into our space, you feel at home in your body. You feel safe. You have a great time. That’s it.
I’m talking to people who want to be part of something new *before* it goes mainstream. We’re still untouched as a modality. We’re on the back burner right now, but we’re making our way to the front. If you’re someone who wants to take a chance on something real—whether you’re a potential participant, an investor, a partner, or someone who wants to teach this—now is the time. We’re building something that’s going to matter.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
The biggest risk I’m taking right now is betting on a dormant modality. Step aerobics was huge in the seventies, eighties, into the nineties. Bringing it back? That’s a risk. You’re asking: Is there a market? Are people interested? Will they actually try it? Those are real questions, and I’m living in that uncertainty.
Positioning ourselves as the authority and standard in step aerobics is also a risk. We don’t want to let anybody down. We’re putting 110% into understanding this modality so we can build something that grows organically and sustains itself.
Here’s how I think about risk: it’s a necessary part of the journey. There’s no reward without risk. But I’m as calculated as I can be with my choices. I’ve already lost money building this. I have an amazing circle of people I can go to for guidance when I need it. So I move from a place of: calculate the risk, then manage it from there.
Timing matters too. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Every action, every choice—there’s a time and a place for it. And yeah, there should be some level of risk involved, whether it’s low or high. But we don’t grow without it.
I’m an entrepreneur. I don’t work a nine-to-five. I have to get it where I can, and that in itself is a risk. But I trust and believe in myself that I’m going to make this happen. The people around me who support me—we’re going to do it together.
My philosophy is simple: I’ll risk it all for something I believe in. At the end of the day, at least I can say I tried. That matters to me more than playing it safe.
