Today we’d like to introduce you to Sunny Ferguson
Hi Sunny, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey has been all about hard work, patience, and trusting myself even when the odds weren’t in my favor. Honestly, opening my business wasn’t part of the plan at the time, and I was more nervous than I’d ever been. I lacked the funds, the knowledge, and a solid strategy, but I took the risk, and it worked out.
My skin struggles sparked my transition from hair and makeup to a career in aesthetics. After my first facial, a lightbulb went off. Within days of starting my new job, I quickly realized that skin of color required different care and that the industry lacked proper education on the complexities of melanin-rich skin. That pushed me to seek the right training to safely and effectively treat all skin tones. This was something I knew had to be a priority in my work.
From day, I knew GB Aesthetics had to be a space where everyone felt seen, supported, and respected. As a Black queer woman, I’d spent years shrinking myself to fit into boxes I was never meant to be in. I didn’t see a space for people like me, so I built one. A space rooted in inclusivity, education, and real connection.
As I grew, I naturally gravitated toward treating acne and hyperpigmentation, especially for clients with skin of color. That passion led me to pursue advanced training with Face Reality Skincare and adopt a holistic approach that includes not just treatments, but lifestyle, nutrition, and mindset.
Eventually, my vision expanded even further. I enrolled in nursing school to deepen my understanding of internal health and bring a more integrative perspective to skincare and wellness. I’m now building a team of like-minded experts who share my values and are just as committed to client care as I am.
This journey has been full of risks, lessons, and growth. But through it all, I’ve remained committed to offering an experience that goes beyond skincare—an experience rooted in care, compassion, and community. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the love and support of my clients, loved ones, mentors, and this incredible community that continues to inspire me every day.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey hasn’t been easy. As a new esthetics business owner, I quickly realized success involved more than just mastering skin treatments. I needed to keep up with trends, learn new techniques, and invest in education, all while managing bookings, inventory, and client communication. It was a lot to handle.
I’ve overspent on studio tools, battled rising rent, and tried to manage every role myself, leading to burnout and self-doubt. Imposter syndrome crept in as I compared my progress to others. With unpredictable income, the challenges of marketing and social media, and my nursing studies, things became overwhelming.
Additionally, I faced significant challenges with my mental health, making it difficult to find time to focus on myself. Although I always presented a “sunny” personality, not many people were aware of my internal struggles. As someone who is both marginalized and underrepresented, I also often felt hesitant to set ambitious goals. These struggles kept me complacent for a while. I had to come to the realization that I couldn’t effectively support my clients or grow my business without first prioritizing my well-being.
However, I eventually recognized that my perspective was part of the problem. Things began to change once I faced my fears and embraced my strengths. I realized I needed to be my biggest fan and fully own my journey, struggles, and all.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was naturally curious and loved exploring different interests. I was easygoing, personable, and always eager to connect with people, but I was a little too friendly sometimes. I loved spending time outdoors, whether fishing, riding my bike, or hanging out at the beach or pool, but I could just as quickly spend hours playing video games and Barbies or learning the lyrics to my favorite songs.
From a young age, I had a nurturing side. I started babysitting early and genuinely enjoyed taking care of others. I was also a huge animal lover and even dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. My dad still tells the story of how I helped deliver my dog’s puppies, staying calm throughout the process.
I was confident in some ways. I was in drama, dance, and cheerleading. I was also sensitive and non-confrontational. I worked hard in school and loved making my parents proud. In my teens, I developed more of an “I don’t care” attitude. Looking back, it was just a front to protect myself when I felt unsure or vulnerable.
Overall, I was kind-hearted, highly active, optimistic, playful, and curious. I enjoyed doing things that made me happy and being surrounded by loved ones. I think it’s fair to say that I’ve always sought after the “feel good” life, and I’m the same way today.
