Today we’d like to introduce you to Sofia Paredes
Hi Sofia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My love for boutiques began when I was just 14, spending Saturdays with my mom and sister, going to all the boutiques I found on Instagram. Shopping at these unique stores gave me a sense of exclusivity, offering outfits that couldn’t be found in big brand stores. My mom, channeling her inner Kris Jenner, would often say, ‘What if you opened your own?’ At the time, the idea seemed far-fetched, as I was focused on pursuing a career in nursing. However, several semesters into my studies, despite excelling in my classes, I knew it wasn’t what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
During my sophomore year in college, I landed a job at a boutique and loved everything about it. I spent a year there and knew this was something I wanted to pursue. I shared my vision with my mom, and we immediately got to work. Six months later, Gossip Boutique Miami launched on May 10th, 2021. It started as an online store that I ran from home while juggling a part-time job and completing my degree at FIU.
For two years, I balanced these commitments until graduation, when I faced a pivotal decision: pursue a career in my field or take my business to the next level. The little hustler in me couldn’t let go of the brand I had worked so hard to build. I started searching for the perfect location and found Suite House & Co. in Pembroke Pines, a space that felt like the perfect fit for my vision. I signed the lease in April and officially opened the doors on May 10th, the same date we launched online in 2021.
Now, I proudly run Gossip Boutique Miami in Pembroke Pines, where I’ve created a welcoming space for women to shop, endulge in “girl therapy”, and leave feeling excited about their new outfits. It’s been an incredible journey, and I couldn’t be happier with how far we’ve come.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Anyone starting a business/brand from scratch can agree that it’s never a smooth road at the beginning.
Even after years of running a business, you always need to prepared for any obstacles that come your way. For me, the biggest obstacle was gaining the courage to be more present on social media. I knew it was essential to build a connection with my followers and reach a greater audience but I was so shy/scared until I did it one day and haven’t stopped since. One thing I learned was that people love to see everything that happens behind the scenes of what you usually share about your brand. What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I am a perfectionist and love to be in control of absolutely everything. However, when building a brand and running a business, I learned sometimes I’m not going to have control over everything and it’s okay. This is a one man show and it’s okay to make mistakes. It’s also okay to ask for help! I refused to let my pride down to ask others for help/advice for a very long time. If there’s 2 things I am sure of, it’d be:
– There’s always someone who’d love to help/guide you whether that’s a family member, friend, or mentor.
– Two minds are better than one. Collaborating with others can reveal insights and catch details you might miss on your own.
