Hidden Gems: Meet Romina Derbogosian of practice

Today we’d like to introduce you to Romina Derbogosian.

Hi Romina , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My Story – How I Became a Psychologist

From a very young age, I knew I had a deep passion for listening and helping others. My vocation found me early, so when the time came, I never hesitated to enroll in the Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology.
As I advanced through my studies, my interest in psychoanalysis grew stronger. Once I graduated, I decided to continue deepening my knowledge through a two-year postgraduate program in Psychoanalysis with Clinical Practice in Adults. That was when I began seeing my first patients in a private practice setting.

After completing my postgraduate studies, I opened my first office in Quilmes, Buenos Aires — the city where I was born and raised. I worked there for several years until I joined the team at CEMIM (Comprehensive Medical Center for Women), where I had the privilege of sharing space and experience with professionals from other medical specialties. I hold the fondest memories from that period.

Then, in mid-2019, my family and I made the life-changing decision to move to the United States. At first, it was challenging — I hadn’t planned to continue practicing psychology here. But when the pandemic arrived, it unexpectedly opened the door to a new way of working: online therapy.

This new modality not only allowed me to return to my practice, but it also became the preferred method for many patients, thanks to its convenience and accessibility. In the beginning, I had just a few clients again, but over time, more and more people embraced virtual therapy.

Today, I’m grateful to have a full schedule and the privilege of accompanying patients from all around the world — all with just one click.

In recent years, as I’ve continued to grow both personally and professionally, my understanding of health has evolved significantly. I now believe that true well-being is the result not only of emotional balance, but also of a conscious integration of physical activity, healthy eating, meditation, proper rest, and social connection — all as essential pillars of a fulfilling life.
This holistic perspective inspired me to specialize in Psychonutrition and Sports Psychology, two disciplines I gradually fell in love with and that now allow me to help both athletes and individuals seeking a healthier relationship with food, their body image, and their daily habits.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course not — like any meaningful journey, it’s been filled with moments of great progress, periods of stagnation, and even a few steps backward. But my passion for this profession has always been the driving force that kept me believing I would find a way to continue doing what I love and what I know how to do best.

At this point, I feel it’s essential to mention a dear colleague and friend, Florencia Faiat. Flor and I met in Miami — both Argentine psychologists who had emigrated and were finding our way in a new country. Flor played a fundamental role in my professional growth, as she was the one who encouraged me to create my Instagram profile, @psico.romi.

She motivated me to believe that there could be a space for me on that platform. So, filled with doubts and with very little certainty (and a healthy dose of fear of making a fool of myself, lol), I began sharing content online. I wasn’t entirely sure who I was speaking to, but I always knew what I wanted to say and how I wanted to say it.

From the beginning, my goal was to communicate with simplicity — to share uplifting messages that invite reflection and connection. I try to speak about everyday topics that people can relate to, and that’s how this community started to grow, little by little.

Thanks to that space, I’ve had opportunities I never could have imagined, and for that, I’ll always be deeply grateful to my dear Flor.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about practice?
In addition to my work as an online psychologist, I’m proud to share that together with my colleague and dear friend Florencia Faiat, we’ve created an online program designed for people who struggle to maintain healthy habits and implement lasting positive changes.

This program, grounded in psychology and neuroscience, combines theory with practical tools. It’s designed to help participants understand why human beings tend to procrastinate and to guide them through a process of building healthier, more sustainable habits.

Our goal is not only to encourage change, but to help people make it last — to develop routines and mindsets that truly support their well-being over time.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I believe the practice of psychology has evolved tremendously throughout the years I’ve been in this beautiful profession.

We live in a world where genuine human connection is increasingly fragile — where it’s hard to look each other in the eye without a phone in between, and where true listening has become rare. As a society, we are longing for spaces where we can talk openly, be heard, and feel held.

We are social beings, and an empathetic bond with another person is a fundamental need. Yet today, most of our interactions happen through messages, video calls, or shared reels. What’s often missing is attentive listening, the feeling of being truly understood, an encouraging word, a compassionate look, or a comforting embrace.

In response to these gaps, I try every day to offer my patients a space where they can feel genuinely listened to and understood — a space built on empathy, respect, and authenticity.
I know they feel and appreciate that intention, and that’s what makes this work so meaningful to me.
