Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin Diamond.
Hi Robin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to New York City as soon as I graduated from college and while I was unsure of what I wanted to do career wise, I knew I wanted to write. I majored in sociology, not journalism, so I was unclear I was going to make this happen, but that didn’t really scare me. While looking for jobs at publishing houses, I came across a position at a boutique PR firm that specialized in luxury jewelry. I knew someone who worked in PR and it sounded like I might like it so I applied. I got the job and that is where my professional career began. As an assistant, I wasn’t tasked with much, but I did learn the ins and outs of PR and I knew that I had chosen the right career path. After about a year, I left that job for a bigger agency, and that position was one of my most memorable. I worked on major brands in the lifestyle space such as Martha Stewart as well as Laura Mercier in the beauty industry. I fell in love with beauty PR and the rest is history. From there, I moved to an agency that focused solely on beauty brands and I was there until I moved back to Miami, which is where I was born and yes. Yes, I’m a true native.
Once back in Miami, I worked for an agency before going in-house with a beauty brand. When the time came for me to spread my wings again, I decided to take a leap of faith and go out on my own. At first, I started freelancing, taking on projects for bigger (NYC-based) agencies that needed extra help as well as handling accounts for smaller ones. As time passed, I started to get approached to handle my own accounts. One by one, my client roster grew and I decided it was time to establish my own business, Robin Diamond Public Relations.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As with any business, there are always obstacles along the way. I think you’ll be hard-pressed to find any entrepreneur to tell you otherwise. Starting out on my own was the best decision, but also the scariest, financially speaking. Without the security of a salary and benefits, as one has working for someone else, the owness is all on you, so you need to hustle. The hardest part when starting out was figuring out the timing of when contracts and projects were coming to a close and which were renewing to ensure a steady income.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Robin Diamond Public Relations?
My business, Robin Diamond Public Relations, specializes in beauty, fitness and wellness public relations for brands and personalities on a local and national level. While I am based in Miami, my outreach is predominantly national media. I’ve had the pleasure of working in incredible brands in each sector, and I primarily work with female-founded brands. What sets me and my business apart is the individual attention that each client receives. I carefully choose my clients and only take on accounts that I am passionate about. I know “they” say not to mix business with pleasure, but I often wind up becoming quite friendly with clients. The publicist – client relationship is so crucial and there is so much trust involved that usually over time, a friendship evolves naturally.
Some of my proudest moments are helping a local Miami-based workout blow up on the national fitness scene. The brand was featured everywhere from the New York Times to The Today Show. More recently, I helped a client who had big dreams for major press that had yet to be realized featured in a two-page spread in Allure magazine as well as stories in InStyle, Elle, Shape and many, many more.
While the world of PR has changed dramatically since I started out thanks to social media, the rise of influencers and even the shifts in digital media, you have to learn to adapt, which I have done. While PR is my main focus, I have solid influencer connections that I utilize depending on my client’s needs, as well as have a strong understanding of social media. While I don’t manage client’s social accounts, I do provide valuable insight.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I am a pretty open book and most that know me well and know my work know that I practice what I preach. If it’s beauty, wellness or fitness-related, I’ll try it. The more woo woo, the better! When I’m not wearing my PR hat, I am busy writing about beauty and wellness, for StayFit305.com. And, this past summer, I dedicated 10-weeks and 200-hours to becoming a certified yoga teacher. This is a somewhat full-circle moment because when I was growing up, my mom was a yoga teacher. Keep in mind, yoga was not as popular then as it is today, so I always thought her teaching yoga was weird. The joke is on me, I guess. For me, the amazing feeling of landing a huge client placement is similar to the feeling of guiding a room full of people through a power vinyasa class. I’m lucky that there is so much synergy between my professional and personal life as it makes every day flow smoother. And all the yoga has certainly helped me learn to take deep breaths when things get hectic with work and life.
