Hidden Gems: Meet Priscilla Vela of Vela Beauty Bar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Priscilla Vela

Hi Priscilla , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am from Houston, Texas, where I was born and raised. I am 5th generation Mexican American. As the oldest of five children, like many others, I grew up with very little. There were moments when it seemed like things were improving, only to have my parents struggle once again.
Those times were tough, and I despised that feeling.
At the age of 14, I became pregnant with my son. It’s hard to imagine how challenging life could have been for us. However, I believe that God had a plan for me. He knew I needed a best friend to ensure I would never feel alone, and He understood that I would strive to create the best possible life for us.
In 2019, I followed my heart and relocated to South Florida with my son. For the first time ever, life felt calm and peaceful. We finally felt at home.
Then in 2020, like so many others, I was laid off from my job, and the financial strain hit me hard. The doctor I worked for immediately canceled my insurance, taking a significant portion of my last paycheck. I realized then that I never wanted to find myself in that position again.
Being an entrepreneur has always been part of who I am. From an early age, I sold anything I could. I wrote poems for friends and charged them, took photos, built resumes, and created business cards and invitations. Anything that allowed me to express my creativity while earning money was my passion.
I believe that entrepreneurial drive is innate; you either have it or you don’t.
In 2020, I decided to enroll in a real estate course and a lash extension course. By 2021, Vela Beauty Bar was established, and it’s clear which path I chose to pursue.
My ultimate goal has always been to build a thriving business in a new city.
For the first two years, I balanced a full-time job while growing my business. In 2023, I left my full-time position when I was confident I was on track to double my salary. Along the way, I’ve met incredible clients who have become friends, and I’m on the path to achieving my first six-figure year. I have so much to be grateful for, and I realize I still have a long way to go.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Some of the challenges, I faced early on as an entrepreneur was skill level. I have always been a perfectionist and everything that I do, however when it comes to lash extension practice and patience is key.
When I started to focus more on my skill, I noticed a change in my business. Another struggle early on even today was finding new clients. Every one of my clients started off a complete stranger I have no family and friends here in Florida, which made a challenging, I’ve always been up for the challenge
