Today we’d like to introduce you to Nnena Jobe.
Hi Nnena, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started off as a print and runway model in 2010. Shortly after being on the runway scene, I realized I had a natural talent for makeup artistry. I learned how to do my own makeup for runway shows. Makeup artists would get me in their chairs and do my makeup, but I’d always find something to alter even though I didn’t know how to do makeup. I had an eye for what makeup should look like, so I became self-taught, and my runway peers encouraged me to a start doing makeup on them. Shortly after, I started designing my business cards just to see if people would really book me. People began to book me, but I still needed to work. I worked a few different job for a few years, then is 2017 I landed a Color Advisor position at Sephora for 3 years which helped me gain even more experience in makeup artisty, along with skincare & product knowledge. I was trained on so many brands & products I became obsessed with products and learning how to maximize my makeup artistry & skincare skills. After 3 years at Sephora, I landed a job at BlueMercury and from there I built even more skincare knowledge & makeup artisty skills. I continued to germinate and become well-rounded in both areas.
The pandemic came and I saw an opportunity. I decided to take a leap and expand my title from Professional Makeup Artist to Esthetician as well. Skin and makeup go hand in hand. I needed to go to school to obtain my license and within 4 months of being enrolled, I opened a home spa. Which did well. It was easy for me to transition my makeup clients to my spa clients. Within 6 months of the home spa, I was given the opportunity to branch out into a spa suite in an amazing neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY.
I’ve been in my spa suite for a little over a year now. It hasn’t been an easy journey, but it’s worth it, and I wouldn’t change a thing about my journey. My whole life was built for this very moment in time. I’m grateful.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road and that’s the beauty of the journey. You never know what’s coming next even when you put out the work for what you want. I feel strongly that God always has a plan. You could plan, but God will unplan and send you in a whole different direction.
It wasn’t easy for me going back to school in a pandemic, having a full-time job, and being a single mother. It was very scary. Many days I wanted to quit, but I had to pull myself out of darkness and embrace my purpose and run towards what I truly wanted and that was to empower, educate, and inspire humans how to take better care of their skin and not just their skin but their entire being, from their spirit, mental, and physical.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a holistic beauty spa that offers makeup, facials, waxing, and massage services. We take pride in empowering, educating, & inspiring human beings to take greater care of their spirit, mind, and body.
We take pride in taking our time with every service by explaining every step and product we use on our clients. We help our clients build a daily skincare regimen, so they won’t just depend on us to care for their skin but to embrace self-love by taking care of their skin in between the time they aren’t with us on a daily basis.
Our clients never leave empty-handed. We make sure to give samples of holistic skincare brands so they can try and gain confidence in caring for themselves.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Most importantly I’ve learned to create my own destiny with the words I speak into my life and the action I add to it.
We limit ourselves by the fears we create. We have the power to change our situations if we really want to.
