Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Micucci.
Hi Nicole, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always viewed the world through a deeply empathic lens. Growing up in South Florida, I was raised by my mother, grandmother, and aunt in a home filled with warmth, creativity, and the soft energy of strong, loving women. I spent much of my childhood expressing myself through the arts. Painting, dancing, acting, and singing helped me make sense of emotions I often felt deeply, even when they weren’t my own.
At 15, everything changed. I experienced significant loss, including the death of my grandmother, and a shift in my family structure that left me navigating life with a new sense of independence. During that time, I was supported by close family friends, but I lacked a therapeutic space to truly process my grief and emotional confusion. That absence quietly planted the seed for the work I do today.
In college, I pursued social work after a deeply personal turning point. I met my father for the first time, followed shortly after by a serious accident he was involved in, which led me to reflect on what truly mattered. I enrolled in the Social Work Program at the University of Central Florida, where I found the validation and connection I had long craved. I developed a systemic lens and discovered my natural ability to support others through pain, growth, and healing.
After earning my Master’s in Social Work, I began my career working with children, teens, and families in community-based settings throughout Palm Beach County. These early experiences reinforced my holistic, person-in-environment perspective. I saw the impact of trauma and addiction firsthand, which led me to pursue work in comprehensive addiction treatment, centered in Fort Lauderdale—a space I felt deeply connected to.
I quickly recognized the deep-seated trauma carried by many of my clients, which inspired me to pursue advanced training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). This training was transformative not only for my clients, but for my entire approach. It shifted my focus toward root-cause healing and offered a powerful framework for helping individuals move beyond coping and toward true transformation.
When the world shifted in 2020, I was already supporting clients remotely. That time brought clarity. I wanted to create something more personal and purpose-driven. From that vision, Roots in Wisdom Counseling was born. My practice is rooted in the belief that within our pain lies wisdom, and that with the right support, we can reconnect with our inner strength and rewrite the stories we carry.
Today, I work virtually with adults across Florida who are often navigating complex trauma, anxiety, ADHD, relationship challenges and major life transitions. I aim to provide holistic based care, focusing on elements of health and well-being. It is a true honor to hold space for others as they heal, grow, and rediscover themselves.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. Like many business owners, my journey into private practice was far from linear. I first launched my practice in April of 2020, more so on a whim while in between jobs. At the time, I had a few clients express interest in working with me privately, so I took a few small but meaningful steps toward making things official. However, I was still early in my clinical journey and had been working primarily in highly supervised treatment settings. I didn’t yet have the confidence—or the clarity—to manage a full caseload independently.
Recognizing that, I decided to pause my practice and returned to agency work to gain more experience providing individual therapy with less oversight. I wanted to feel grounded in my clinical skills, especially when it came to developing long-term client relationships and learning evidence-based modalities through more intensive training.
But if I’m being honest, the biggest barrier between me and fully pursuing private practice wasn’t skill or training—it was fear. Fear around everything we were never taught in grad school, like how to actually run a business, manage billing, or market yourself in a way that feels authentic. I dragged my feet for about three years, unsure of how to bridge the gap between being a skilled clinician and a confident business owner.
What ultimately pushed me forward was watching a close friend and colleague leave our agency to start her own thriving practice. At the same time, the agency I was working for began going through major organizational changes, and administrative issues started to directly impact my clients. That felt like my sign. I decided to commit fully and began laying the groundwork for a sustainable practice—one that would allow me to focus more on client care and less on logistics.
From the start, I prioritized systems that would make life easier for both me and my clients, especially around insurance and payments. There’s nothing more frustrating than reaching out for help and being met with confusion around cost or coverage. I wanted the process to feel seamless and supportive from the first contact.
By September 2024, I was able to leave my agency job and step fully into my private practice, which has been running at full capacity ever since. Along the way, I’ve become more confident in marketing and have taken time to shape a brand that feels aligned with who I am. I’ve leaned on the support of colleagues, including the friend who paved the way for me, my close friend who works in senior-level marketing, and my husband, who’s a director in finance. I always tell other clinicians—look around you. You don’t need to know everything. But chances are, someone in your circle does.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Roots in Wisdom Counseling is a virtual private therapy practice serving adults across the state of Florida. I specialize in working with individuals who are navigating trauma, anxiety, ADHD, relationship issues, and major life transitions. Many of my clients are caretakers, high-achievers, and deeply empathic people who often find themselves feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck. My approach is trauma-informed, relational, and grounded in getting to the root of what’s going on, not just helping people cope, but helping them heal.
What sets Roots in Wisdom apart is the way I integrate brain-based and somatic trauma therapies like EMDR and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) into a warm, personalized therapeutic relationship. I also bring a strong focus to helping clients explore how their past is shaping their present, so they can begin to rewrite the story they’re living. While therapy often includes deep emotional work, I make sure the process feels approachable, collaborative, and grounded. Clients frequently share that they feel truly seen and deeply supported in our work together.
I’m most proud of how authentic the brand feels to who I am as a person and as a therapist. Roots in Wisdom was built with intention—from the systems behind the scenes to the tone of my website and the energy I bring into each session. I wanted the experience of working with me to feel seamless, safe, and human. That includes making insurance and payments easy to manage, offering consistent availability, and maintaining a space where clients don’t feel rushed or like just another name on a schedule.
More than anything, I want people to know that healing is possible, and they don’t have to do it alone. Therapy can feel like a big step, but it’s also one of the most empowering ones. Whether someone is dealing with the weight of past trauma or simply feeling lost in their current season of life, there is always a path forward. My role is to walk alongside them as they reconnect with their own clarity, strength, and wisdom.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
That is an excellent question, and it actually gets me a little emotional thinking about my own journey and where I’ve come from.
Early in my social work studies, one of my professors shared a powerful idea that has stayed with me ever since. She said, “There is no such thing as being self-made.” She explained that the successful businessperson we see today didn’t get there alone. They drove a car built by skilled workers, traveled on roads paved by dedicated construction teams, and worked in office buildings designed and built by countless individuals. It was a profound reminder that success is never a solo journey.
This concept shaped the foundation of my own success. Gratitude, recognizing and honoring the many hands and hearts that contribute to our path, and the humility to say, “I don’t know, but let me find out,” have taken me a very long way.
Mentorship has been essential. The guidance and supervision I’ve received along the way have shaped me into both the therapist and the person I am today. Resilience has also played a critical role. Drawing from my own life experiences and traumas, I’ve learned the importance of showing up fully for my clients, even when it’s hard, while also knowing when to prioritize self-care and rest.
Building momentum has been one of the most important characteristics contributing to my success. It’s about recognizing the value of consistent progress and the willingness to keep moving forward, even when things feel slow or challenging. Alongside this, creating intentional systems tailored to both my personal working style and the needs of my practice has been essential. These systems provide the structure and support needed to sustain momentum over time without burning out.
Underlying all of this is patience and self-love, the practice of treating myself with the same kindness, compassion, and understanding that I strive to offer my clients every day. Recognizing that growth and success are ongoing processes, and allowing myself grace along the way, has truly made all the difference.
