Hidden Gems: Meet Laura Parodi of Azzurra Health Care Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Parodi

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m Laura Parodi, originally from Puerto Rico, but I’ve called Buenos Aires, Argentina, home since I was seven. Growing up, I’ve always felt a deep connection to helping children with learning disabilities and special needs. This led me to study psychopedagogy and work as a Kindergarten teacher.
In 1989, I graduated from the University of Belgrano and married my husband Alberto. We have three amazing children. Facing economic challenges in Argentina, we made the tough choice to move to the United States in 2001 for better opportunities.
Upon arriving, I joined Goodwill Industries, focusing on counseling and job training for individuals with special needs. By 2008, I fulfilled my dream of starting my private therapy practice. Today, as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I use my personal journey to help others heal and grow. In 2021, I founded Azzurra Health Care Center.

Can you describe any obstacles or challenges you’ve faced that have had a lasting impact on you?
Transitioning from Buenos Aires to the United States posed numerous challenges, from adapting to a new culture to overcoming language barriers. However, the most daunting obstacle came unexpectedly in 2005 with a stage 3 Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosis.
Balancing cancer treatment alongside professional duties and family responsibilities pushed me to my limits. Yet, with sheer determination and the unwavering support of my loved ones, I endured. It was a tough journey, marked by a year of chemotherapy and two months of radiation therapy.
Despite the hardships, I emerged stronger and more resolute. Today, I leverage my experiences to help others facing adversity, offering empathy and understanding as I guide them toward healing and fulfillment.

What do you like and dislike about working in the mental health care industry?
At Azzurra Health Care Center, I’m deeply gratified by the personalized care we deliver. Tailoring treatment plans to each client’s needs fosters empowerment and progress, creating a nurturing environment where clients feel supported on their healing journey. Collaborating with a dedicated team of mental health professionals amplifies our impact, allowing us to pool our expertise and passion for promoting well-being. Additionally, our commitment to accessibility, offering various payment options and community outreach initiatives, ensures mental health care is available to all, regardless of financial circumstances.

Yet, like any endeavor, Azzurra has its challenges. Administrative tasks can sometimes be overwhelming, which has limited some of my time seeing clients face to face. Limited resources can hinder efforts to expand services or outreach, the insurance market can sometimes be tricky to navigate, and educating about mental health stigmas to the community remains an ongoing struggle. Despite these obstacles, my dedication to Azzurra’s mission remains unwavering. I am committed to providing accessible, high-quality mental health care, supporting individuals on their path to well-being, and fostering a community where mental health is a priority.
