Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyla Kahian.
Hi Kyla, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started in the mortgage industry in 2005, long before it was glamorous and right before the world fell apart in 2008. I was an 18-year-old single mother—I had my son in 2003—and failure was never an option for me. I didn’t have a safety net, so I built one.
For almost 15 years I stayed behind the scenes in operations. I knew the business inside and out, but I was afraid to step into a commission-only role as a loan originator. Stability mattered when you’re feeding a child on your own. Still… the dream never left.
In 2019, I finally bet on myself. I became a full-time originator, broke, exhausted, scared—but determined. And it was the best decision of my career. I’ve always told myself: quitting is only for things and people that are bad for me. Not the things meant for me. I’m stubborn, I’m a Taurus, and I’m a fighter.
I always wanted my own branch, so I spoke it into existence. I met my business partner at a mortgage conference, and together we launched Amethyst Mortgage—first under another broker, and two years later, we became our own fully independent brokerage. Our vision isn’t just to close loans. We’re building something that lasts—branches in multiple states, a team built on integrity, and a culture where people feel informed, cared for, and financially empowered.
My approach is different because I lived this business from the ground up—operations, processing, underwriting guidelines—so I take a consultative approach. I don’t sell loans. I educate families. I give them confidence. I teach investors how to build portfolios and generational wealth. I’m here to change lives, not chase commissions.
My journey hasn’t been easy. I came from nothing, went through the market crash, raised children alone, survived heartbreak, betrayal, financial ruins, and still never quit. Most people would’ve never even tried—but I did it anyway. I’ve always walked with faith. God has never failed me, even when life did.
What I know for sure is this: you can lose everything overnight. People aren’t always who they seem. Trust yourself. Work with integrity. And understand you are the most powerful person in your own world.
I do this for the people I serve, for my children, and to prove that no matter where you start—your story can still become something beautiful.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve faced more obstacles than I can count—becoming a single mother at 18, entering a male-dominated industry, surviving the 2008 market crash, rebuilding from financial hardship, and stepping into a commission-only career with no safety net. There were times I was exhausted, broke, and scared, but quitting was never an option—especially with a child depending on me.
Starting a brokerage from the ground up brought new challenges: being underestimated, learning compliance, funding a business with no investors, losing people I trusted, and still showing up for my family and clients.
But every challenge built my grit, faith, and discernment. Those experiences are why I lead differently—with heart, knowledge, and resilience.
We’ve been impressed with Amethyst Mortgage LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Amethyst Mortgage is a client-first, independently owned mortgage brokerage built on integrity, expertise, and heart. We aren’t just in the business of closing loans — we’re in the business of changing lives, building financial legacies, and making homeownership and real estate investing more accessible, transparent, and empowering.
What sets us apart is our approach. I’ve been in the mortgage industry for over 20 years, with most of that time spent in operations — processing, underwriting guidelines, structuring, solving problems before they reach the surface. That background allows us to do what many others can’t: take a truly consultative approach. We don’t just quote rates; we educate, strategize, and help our clients make the best financial decision for their future.
We specialize in:
Residential mortgages (FHA, VA, Conventional, Jumbo, First-Time Homebuyers)
Investor loans (DSCR, fix-and-flip, multi-unit, short-term rentals, portfolio lending)
Complex, non-traditional loans (bank statement, ITIN, self-employed, foreign national)
Financial restructuring: refinances, HELOCs, debt consolidation, wealth-building strategies
Our clients come to us because they want someone they trust — someone who will tell them the truth, fight for their deal, protect them from making costly mistakes, and guide them like family. We are known for our transparency, relentless work ethic, and ability to get difficult loans approved that others decline.
Brand-wise, I am most proud of our reputation. Nearly every client we serve comes from a referral or someone who was told, “Go to Amethyst, they’ll take care of you.” We have built a name that stands for honesty, excellence, and compassion. Our vision is to expand into multiple states, build branches with loan originators who lead with integrity, and create a legacy business that outlives us.
At Amethyst, we believe mortgages are more than transactions — they are life-changing moments. We treat them that way.
What does success mean to you?
Success, to me, is freedom—the ability to live life on my own terms. It’s picking my kids up from school, being present for their milestones, traveling, and having the time to enjoy the life I’ve worked so hard to build.
Financial independence is a part of that, but true success is when my business runs smoothly with a strong team in place—allowing me to focus on my passions: philanthropy, writing, and motivational speaking. I want to build a foundation that gives back, empower others to rise, and show that faith and perseverance can rewrite any story.
