Hidden Gems: Meet Kierra Haywood of Kierra CroSlay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kierra Haywood

Hi Kierra, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in a faith-based home where my mother always encouraged me to ‘be the job’ and to have faith. I coasted through high school and college because I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do. I felt like everyone around me had a vision, but I was totally blind. I was academically dismissed from college TWICE because I didn’t apply myself like I could have- I didn’t believe in what I was doing. I managed to earn my Associate’s degree, but I knew traditional college wasn’t the right path for me.

I spent most of my 20s working a government job. While I was grateful for what many would consider a solid career, I could never quite find my place. In 2020, I got COVID and surprisingly, it became a major turning point in my life. Because I contracted it during the height of the pandemic, testing centers were backed up and I couldn’t return to work without a negative test. I was home for over a month, and after I recovered, I had a lot more time on my hands than I ever had before. I started exploring my creative side and quickly realized that I was meant to work for myself. I knew I wouldn’t be able to fully pursue my passion while maintaining a 9-5 job. I needed mental clarity and time to figure out what truly energized me.

When I finally went back to work, I felt completely out of place. After nearly 10 years in the company, I worked one more month and decided to resign with no real plan. I took a leap of faith and chose to bet on myself. Many people doubted me, but I knew that if I jumped, God would carry me.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This journey has definitely been full of bumps. I didn’t realize just how fast money runs out when there’s no consistent income (who knew?) There were times I couldn’t pay important bills and had to lean on my loved ones to get by. Entrepreneurship demands so much—being a marketer, accountant and social media expert, all while delivering the service! It can feel totally overwhelming, and if you’re not careful, the anxiety can creep in.

For the past few years, I’ve been working hard to overcome anxiety. I’ve felt anxious and jittery even when things were going great. When this happens, I feel like I’m in danger all day and I’m unable to do simple tasks. I’ve missed so many deadlines and opportunities because I simply couldn’t move. Even getting out of the bed has been a challenge. Thankfully, my faith in God has been an anchor when I’ve wanted to give up on everything—myself included. Through prayer, therapy, and coffee (hehe), I’ve made a lot of progress. I’ve realized there’s not much you can’t do—you just have to believe and take actionable steps. One doesn’t work without the other.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Kierra CroSlay?
I’m a hairstylist and the owner of Kierra CroSlay, a specialized hair styling service focused on protective styles, with an emphasis on human hair crochet braids. I offer the Hybrid Crochet method, which combines the durability of a sew-in with the versatility of crochet braids. What makes this technique different is that I use human hair instead of the typical synthetic hair, so clients get a style that lasts longer, is low maintenance and protects their edges without needing leave-out, glue, or wigs.

I’m known for having a ‘light hand,’ so my clients don’t have to worry about discomfort during the process. I also work with clients who have alopecia and hair thinning, which is something I’m really passionate about. I love seeing women regain their confidence right before my eyes!

My goal is to enhance their natural beauty while preserving the health of the hair, and I’m proud to offer services that prioritize both aesthetics and care.

What matters most to you? Why?
Spreading the love of Jesus has always been my priority. This doesn’t always look like talking about my faith. Sometimes with a simple hug or judgement-free space to vent, people can feel the love. Before entering into this business, I always wondered what my life’s purpose was. Although I was unsure about the specifics, I simply wanted to help people. Most hair appointments double as therapy sessions and since I’m a natural problem solver, I feel like my purpose is fulfilled more and more with each client.
