Hidden Gems: Meet Kellie Williams of BPM Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kellie Williams.

Hi Kellie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started running track at the age of 8 and fitness immediately became ingrained into my character. The idea of seeing what your body was capable of if you practiced, ate correctly, slept well, warmed up properly, etc., gave me so much joy. Often times I didn’t come in first place, but if I beat my previous time…to me, I won. It trained me really above all, to focus on being a better version of myself. This is evolved into a love for helping others feel the same. With 22 years of experience as personal trainer, fitness instructor, and yoga teacher…I had this immense desire to blend all three modalities into one. The personalization of PT, with the dynamic energy of a group fitness class, and the flow of a vinyasa yoga practice. All with my love of music in mind. I created BPM which is a double acronym. Most often thought of as Beats Per Minute… as we move in sync to my curated playlist, but much more importantly my class is a Balance of Power (HIIT training) and Mobility (yoga and stretch poses). Designed for all fitness levels, BPM allows you to get the huge endorphin release of a high-intensity class immediately followed by the relaxation and restoration of a calming yoga flow. Mix in coaches that are there for you to correct form and encourage you to be your best but have fun while doing so, It’s much more than a class. It’s an experience.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely had been a road with LOTS of sharp turns. Being able to pivot in fitness I feel is the key to the game. New studies and Research cause you to pivot, the economy, even clients. How I trained clients at the age of 30 is not the same way I train them when they are ten years older now. The way I train an expecting mom is a pivot from how I train a 17-year-old student-athlete. 2020 was all about engaging in a virtual way and using minimal to still get maximal results. I’ve enjoyed all the sharp turns and bumps in the road because it always somehow leads me down a new path heading to the same destination…empowering people through wellness.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about BPM Wellness?
BPM Wellness What should you know?

First… that the workout is my 3rd priority. Really 4th because the first priority will always and forever be the safety of my clients. But the next major priority is Community.

I’ve worked in fitness for over 20 years. I love a good sweat! But more and more I realize…what I’m really looking for…is connection, community, and commonalities. Therefore, my brands priority is giving the client a sense of belonging. Classes and workouts can be daunting…almost terrifying at times. I decided to flip that model and turn it into a party, a fitness concert if you will.

What do I specialize in and am known for?

Crazy big energy. Number one. I bring so much energy in the room, it becomes contagious and you can literally feel the shift in people’s posture, facial expressions, and ease in which they move. I create an entire vibe. How? Just by being my honest self. And when I’m my most honest and vulnerable self…others feel they have permission to be the most honest versions of themselves as well. 2nd. Hands down my Music. I study 8 counts; I memorize how many lines or verses in a song before the course. I know how long all my beat drops last; I know where the breaks are. I love the way music affects energy. And seeing someone who looks like they’re going to give up here “I WOKE UP IN BEAST MODE” for example, and just become reinvigorated, lights me up as well.

What sets me apart?

Well, we are all the same in some ways, right? We all at the core of our beings have the same desires. To feel love. To feel a part of community… To feel a sense of purpose. I think what sets each of us apart…is our story, our perspective. As a black woman with roots going back to Birmingham, Alabama. My grandmother told me stories of her life. Segregation, marches, and overcoming. My mom and dad similar, and ways they persevered through so much adversity. My history, my story, and my perspective give me a rich sense of pride. That I’m here not by chance. So many came before me to make my life possible. So, I’ll live it to the fullest. I honor my parents, grandparents, and ancestors by living a big, exciting, and intentional life. I also pass this energy down to my w daughters, Nia and Keira, so they naturally carry that torch on for generations to come. My life story sets me apart. So does yours actually!

What am I most proud of brand-wise?

THE DIVERSITY

When I look out in my classes from the platform I teach on and it is the most beautiful mosaic you can imagine. Ages, ethnicities, genders, races, all moving at the same pace. All getting better. All encouraging each other. It sounds dramatic, but it makes me a bit emotional. The energy is so palpable. Everyone smiling, or sometimes not. Sometimes just looking at each other like “wow, are you as winded as I am?” It’s incredible how are differences end up really fading in my spaces and we really just connect as humans and as unified energy.

What do I want you to know?

BPM is not a workout. It’s a way of life. Your bpm-beats per minute-heart rate. You may focus on it on your workout. But it never stops. Your BPM never stops. It just changes tempo. Just the same the idea of Balanced should always be the goal. This Balance of Power and Mobility that we seek in our physical bodies through HIIT and Yoga goes with us as we hop off of our yoga mat and back into our lives. Can you be balanced. Can you be powerful AND mobile. Can you move with forces yet still be flexible. Are you a goal-setter and a go getter?!? Wonderful. That’s power. But what happens when life causes you to adjust? And it will. Can you be flexible and at ease? That’s the mobility in you. Those two components allow you to be the best version of yourself. I am focused. And I move with grace. I am a relaxed powerhouse. I am BPM.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
None. I love the concept. But I am a firm nonbeliever in luck. Luck is defined as success or failure that happens by chance and not one’s own actions. There is no way anything in my life has happened just by chance. Even at its worst, whatever I’m going through is at least teaching me a lesson that I can take with me in the future. I do believe in blessings. I absolutely believe in favor. And that has been HUGE in my life and business. People that noticed my hard work and put me in a position to be elevated. My mother who prays for me daily. Friends and community that check in on me and find ways to support me. And honestly saying yes to new opportunities and showing up. All these mixed with my passion for wellness really has played all the role in my life and business! But luck…she gets no credit. Lol.
