Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Gomez
Hi Karen, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in New York but raised in Colombia by my grandparents while my mom moved to Miami, determined to chase the American dream. At seven, I joined her in Miami, beginning a new chapter. To support her, I started working early; my first job was in mall retail sales at just 15. I quickly became the top sales rep at Nine West, which fueled my confidence and drive.
At 18, I joined a marketing company where I helped businesses build their digital presence. This was when social media was just taking off—I managed Facebook pages and Instagram accounts, often for real estate clients. Posting listings and open houses sparked a fascination with beautiful homes and the real estate world. My passion was so evident that I was soon recruited by a real estate firm as their marketing director. When people ask why I chose real estate, I laugh and say, “Real estate chose me.”
As I learned more about the business, I saw how my creative marketing drew clients and built buzz around the firm. This success led to a promotion, and I dove into the real work of real estate: cold calls, property research, and data analysis. By 2015, I was ready to get my real estate license—I already knew the industry inside and out and loved every part of it.
Every sale became a memorable journey. The smiles, tears, and triumphs of helping clients realize their dreams—whether buying a first home, investing, or securing a commercial space—continue to be incredibly fulfilling. After working with a few brokerages, I found my place at Real Estate Sales Force with broker Jorge Guerra Jr., whose dedication to the Miami Association of Realtors, Florida Realtors, and the National Association of Realtors inspired me to get involved. Jorge saw the leadership potential in me, and with his encouragement, I joined the Miami Association of Realtors’ YPN (Young Professionals Network) leadership board, became a Florida Realtors Director, and joined the Women’s Council of Realtors.
Being part of these organizations has been pivotal, connecting me with amazing advocates for homeownership and the industry as a whole. In 2021, I bought my first property—an unforgettable milestone as the first in my family to own a home in the U.S. Making my family proud was the best feeling, and it’s just the beginning. Real estate is more than a career; it’s my calling. And I’m just getting started!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey has never been a smooth road. My mom had me at a young age and raised me as a single mother, which meant my upbringing wasn’t easy. From an early age, I had to learn to be responsible and independent—skills I wouldn’t trade, as they’ve shaped me into the woman I am today.
For a long time, I struggled with money management. I was late on bills more times than I’d like to admit. Then, I faced a serious setback: a terrible car accident that left me in a wheelchair for months. Unable to work, I had to move back in with my mom, who was often working long hours. With no close family nearby, I had to handle everything on my own—doctor’s appointments, recovery, all of it.
But I was determined not to let the accident stop me. I was so eager to work again that I took Ubers to showings in my wheelchair, asking drivers to wait while I showed properties. It wasn’t easy—I was also burdened with medical bills that took time to pay off—but we got through it. Every challenge only made me more resilient, and looking back, I see how these experiences have given me the grit and drive to keep moving forward.
